2021 update They now have Pain Aux Raisin – the best! This is a huge deal and means that we don't have to drive to another place when we crave our favourite pastry.
We've been watching them since they first opened and we're glad to see that they are getting busy. We think they have the best plain croissants in town. I love it that they never overcook it, the pastry is flaky without being burnt unhealthy and dry. There's still substantial "bread" left inside for me to taste the ingredients and the soft sponge. Love it! We sat here one morning watching them make croissants and it was an amazing experience. They are more than perfectionists. I won't describe what we saw – it's worth watching – if only just to get impressed, and see how clean and organized everything is. This level of precision and perfectionism – in the uncluttered and orderly kitchen – are all very relaxing to watch, and we've been back since to watch hand crafted croissant being made while enjoying Milano coffee and croissants here. With the excellent pastry, I would love to have a sausage roll there, without garlic, very soft spongy and spicy sausage. One big problem for me before was: they are introducing a lot of other fancy toppings and fillings and the quantity of plain croissants is not very high. They run out of the plain croissants really early in the morning, so I don't always get what I want. BUT, today, they had plenty of buttered croissants, and another tray in the kitchen. May be they do pay attention to reviews – yay!
Updated Mar 24, 2021 – "Not real croissants" – says a French family member of our friend. Yes, and no. I've tasted croissants in LA, SF, Dallas, Washington, New York, UK, Germany, Paris, Australia, Amsterdam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan..., these are definitely not the typical dried out flaky nothings that people everywhere call croissants. Like modern baristas who have transcended a typical cappuccino beyond the kind they make in old fashioned Italian coffee shops, I'd say these are beyond croissants – these are 'Angus Ts' – melt-in-your-mouth-additive-flaky pastry hybrid brioches. And they are highly addictive.
Update Feb 9, 2020 – Last week, I finally broke my no sugar rule and responded to the attention grabbing cries of the cinnamon buns. Actually, I thought a date bun would be safer assuming that the sweetener would be dates. But that wasn't available. Instead I tried the plain cinnamon bun. The bread dough was very good, definitely artisan and substantial but still soft and spongy, just like the "bread" of the croissants. Having been staying off white sugar, I did find the sugar too much and ended up scrapping it off. But I am guessing that someone used to cinnamon buns would probably love this eggy bread. Today, I tried the ham and gruyere because they were out of plain croissants (again!!) by 10:30 am. Ah, but their mocha is...
Read moreThis is a crazy & disappointing experience at this place. As I am a croissant & coffee lover and enjoy trying different places in the city. I live in the neighbourhood and this place was on my list for a while. i finally had a chance to drop by and I ordered 1 “double baked almond & chocolate croissant” and a large size Americano. Then I noticed I got a small size Americano so I went back to the same girl and found out that was her mistake. Fine. Then she would just poured into the large cup and she quickly added more hot water. That’s it!! At that point I wasn’t even sure if she charged me for large or small so I asked her if they charge more for large just to add more hot water and her reply was they are the same price. She said either small or large has 2 espresso shots and large has more hot water. I was very confused and maybe needed just a strong espresso shot after hearing what she said. So joke aside, I asked her again if they charge the same for both sizes and she said yes. Then when I checked the menu board, it clearly indicates the price difference. The large has higher price, of course. I was annoyed she was dishonest and she said she would make another one in small size since I wanted a stronger one and didn’t want the large based in her explanation and it’s more diluted. At that point I wasn’t a happy customer but didn’t want to be another “Karen” in town so I sat down and just tried to forget about it. The coffee? It was like dripped coffee. Weak and mediocre. They use the espresso machine though. Then the “double baked almond & CHOCOLATE croissant”. After a few bites, I noticed the chocolate flavour is missing. I had to really look closer to find any chocolate. As you see the photo shot, I found one tiny piece of chocolate in entire dimension. I kept eating further hoping there is more chocolate? Nope. Another small piece of chocolate. There’s not much difference between the regular almond croissant & “almond & chocolate croissant”. This place was a big let down and I will take my money to somewhere else. To add to this experience, those two Asian girls were not friendly yet stand offish right from the beginning. Do they train them properly or that’s how they were trained? Too bad, the level of this place went from "Angus" went "anxious" or even "unacceptable"...by quite...
Read moreWas all hyped up to go, finally got to try a few items, was very disappointed! The ham and cheese croissant had a bland croissant base with one meager slice of ham and no flavour from what might have been cheese inside. The almond croissant was also very bland based and was there marzipan?? If the cream on top was an almond cream it was quite thin, there was nothing to make it an almond croissant except for the sliced almonds on top under the icing sugar and chocolate drizzle. It wasn’t worth the price paid. The kouign amann, assuming it was the same croissant base, was also bland with not enough sugar! It didn’t have a good caramelization and just overall bleh. The cinnamon bun was the best tasting item of them all, but only if you eat the icing together with the cinnamon bun. Don’t bother doing a taste test of the icing and bun separate from each other.
Overall, not worth the money spent on the items, and actually, couldn’t even buy a plain croissant to see how good this croissant-centric place made them. When asked about a plain croissant, employee replied that they don’t have any to sell as they are still testing it. What are all the other croissants made with then? But if the plain croissant tasted anything like the croissant based items I had, I’m glad my money is still...
