Anna's Cake House — Restaurant in Vancouver

Came to Anna's as I have bought cakes in the past. Greeted by a not so friendly lady behind the counter. This visit was to purchase a 8" Fresh Mango Cake. Brought home (within 20-25mins), kept in fridge for 3-4hrs before consuming. Upon cutting out a slice, I noticed the green leaves on strawberry halves being wilted. Ok, since I don't eat the leaves on strawberries too often, it was no t a big deal. Biting into cake, mango chunks are in between a layer of sponge cake. The top layer of sponge texture was fine, the bottom layer was completely dried out. If you ever had stale cake before, you'll know what I mean. Adding the two together (dry sponge cake and wilted leaves), I determined this cake may have been made days before and they still had sold it to me. Not going back anymore. Anna’s has been around for ages and the reason is that their pastries, cakes and buns are just so yummy! Not the overly sweet and heavy offerings at most western style bakeries, but the light, fresh and delightful Hong Kong style that just satisfies the palate. Another plus is that Starbucks and Bonjour Banh Mi are right next door - thus one can have a great Banh mi, coffee and dessert just by hanging around this block - nice!! I ordered a birthday cake in the morning and right on time at 2:30 it was ready for pick-up. Great staff who’s been there for years and who always seem to welcome you like an old friend each time one comes. And oh, if you’re around there at 5;00 pm, you can get 20% discount on your cakes/buns - thus ensuring that their product is fresh each day....

I first went to this amazing Hong Kong-style bakery during the summer when my partner and I were visiting family in Vancouver. They recommended it to us and we were not disappointed and returned back several times! My partner who is originally from Hong Kong commented that the buns and cakes here reminded them of Hong Kong, so very authentic :-) I then returned by myself during the subsequent winter on an individual visit to Vancouver. And I went out during snowfall to get my family and I some buns and cakes!
