Ash Street Bistro — Restaurant in Vancouver

I was unsure who our server was, due to how little attention we received, no one was mindful of us during our meal. When someone named Joven finally decided to clear the plates, I was asked about the quality of the food. My response was, "I felt it was a little gross." Instead of listening respectfully, clarifying the situation, or offering a solution, this person took it as a personal attack and became dismissive. I then asked him to politely take the plate away, as I didn’t want to explain the quality of the food to someone who already seemed to have a preconceived notion.

The manager or supervisor, Suzanne, arrived almost immediately. I had hoped she would offer a gesture of goodwill, but this did not happen. Upon arrival, I was accused of insulting her staff instead of being met with compassion and understanding. I explained the circumstances in full, and she responded with understanding. However, there was no courtesy shown afterward; I left feeling neglected, unattended, and disappointed.

What I had to eat and my complaints: I ordered a Philly style steak sandwich with shaved ribeye. The meat was overcooked and dry to the point of being rubbery. It was served lukewarm, the cheese was not fully melted, and there was too much gravy, which made the bottom bun feel like a wet, uncooked hot dog when held in the middle. Ash Street Bistro came highly recommended by a friend, so i decided to take my wife there for breakfast on a sunny Sunday morning. What a pleasant surprise!! The Bistro is located inside a senior's residence, and from the moment we walked in, we were impressed. The decor, the setting, and the overall atmosphere were serene, warm and relaxing. We were greeted by the manager, Suzanne, who was incredible friendly and welcoming. She took the time to chat with us, gave us a little background on the residence and the community and even made same excellent menu suggestions. We went with the classic All Canadian Breakfast - sausages, bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, toast and coffee. :) Sure it might sound simple but everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great! And part of all of this is that I don't have to do the dishes afterwards! :) :) The service was excellent and every staff member we encountered was warm and attentive. It made the whole experience even more enjoyable. We're definitely planning to return to try out the Lunch Menu and who knows, we might just...

The food was a little disappointing in that my Reuben was really salty. However, this was served so hot that I burned the roof of my mouth when biting into it. A concern I’ve got here is that this is located with a senior residence area - this is a hazard to be served at this temperature for them let alone me. 😐 Yikes!

My salad was pretty good and had a nice selection of strawberries and veggies on it. The dressing was a little too much but left the excess in the plate.

Service was mixed. I clearly didn’t fit their “standard” customer so was largely left to my own devices. For my bill I had to get up and ask for it because while I kept getting eye contact and nods when I raised my hand for assistance, no one came - that was strange and awkward. 😬

Not a place I’d come back to personally. The food wasn’t anything to write home about and the service mixed. Atmosphere was also not my usual but it also seemed this place doesn’t get a lot of clients that aren’t part of the senior home or visitors to folks...
