the decor is edgy, the staff are amply tattooed, the speakers play underground punk and alternative. the place exudes hipness to the Nth degree (theres even something on the menu called "Poser"), so people will themselves to like it, because they want to associate themselves with the affected, disdainful coolness Budgies is drenched in. at least, thats the only way i can understand how anyone likes this place, because the food is terrible. I spent just south of $10 on a burrito, and the meal I received was 90% flour and rice, 10% everything else.
for the 1st half of the burrito I kept thinking to myself, "OK, for some reason they wrapped it weird and all the rice is at the top, but soon I'll get to the good stuff" until realizing as I chomped past the halfway mark that this is as good as its going to get. Then laughing at myself, the pathetic burrito, my bloated stomach (i cant remember the last time eating a restaurant meal made my stomach gurgle in indignant outrage), and the feeling of having been tricked, and the realization that I would have to buy another meal somewhere else to get through the afternoon. i paid 9 bucks for a few handfuls of rice! the Budgies philosophy of vegetarian burritos evidently is to replace all of what used to be meat, with rice, and nothing beyond that.
i dont think ive ever ordered a more nutritionally imbalanced, sensually boring and generally unsatisfying meal in my entire life, outside of gas stations and fast...
Read moreThis is a popular Mount Pleasant vegetarian burrito/taco restaurant, and a good alternative to the big brand name burrito joints for plant-inclined eaters. The staff are very cool as is the vibe. I've tried a few things here: the Johnny O, Blair Stanley, Jo June, and Poser in either burrito or bowl form, and also the vegan chocolate chip cookie they offer. The Poser so far is the clear winner - the ground round was nicely seasoned. Jo June was alright but blander than expected given that it's made with stewed poblano peppers. I did really like the Johnny O, but the chipotle sour cream is what ties it together, so I’m not sure if the vegan version would hit the same. In general, the burritos/bowls lean toward the “stuff thrown in a bowl together" vibe rather than a cohesive dish to me. It's okay but not something I'd crave. Similarly, the cookie was fine but didn’t wow me. I probably wouldn’t get it again, but I just don’t care for chocolate chip that much unless it’s got something special about it. All that being said, I am willing to go back and keep exploring the menu to see if I find something that really...
Read moreWe were on our way to check out a shop on Broadway and since Budgie's Burritos was nearby, I finally got to use my plant based deals coupon for it. My daughter and I both ordered burrito bowls and took them to go. It looks like a cute place and they have seating downstairs as well. Hope that we can eat in the shop itself next time.
My daughter got The Mr. Jones burrito bowl and I got the Jamedog. The Mr. Jones was a pretty basic combination of ingredients. It had rice, beans, vegan cheese , sour cream, salsa, and green cabbage. Jamedog was similar but slightly more complex as it came with a chipotle sour cream, as well as garlic and lime roasted potatoes.
Wow, those potatoes were so good! If I find myself at Budgie's Burritos again I will definitely order the Jamedog again just so I can eat those wonderful garlic and lime roasted potatoes again.
