My wife and I came to Tenth church about 7 years ago. I was coming off 14 years of volunteer youth ministry. My wife had come out of 7 years of full time campus ministry. We were newlyweds that were tired, broken and thirsty. Thirsty to be fed from the word of God. We heard that one of the strongest things about Tenth was the preaching. Thatâs what drew us to the church originally. Ken Shigematsu and his colleagues have the gift of presenting Godâs word to people of all backgrounds and circumstances. So even though we came because of the preaching, we stayed because of a whole lot more. In the last 7 years, we have found love, acceptance, and community. Our 5 year old daughter now runs around in Sunday school every week- something I have dreamt about for a long time. We have been in small groups, leadership courses and many other ministries. We have met new friends and reconnected with friends from the past. I call Tenth, full circle church- I see people from my past that I thought left the church. I see people that I thought would never set foot inside a church. There is an old song that states:
âEvery day they pass me by, I can see it in their eyes, lonely people filled with care, heading who knows where.â
No matter who you are, what youâve done or where you are from- Tenth is a place where you can call home. Home to the broken, the needy, the proud and the spiritually hungry. I know this because I am all these things. People often shun the church because of people they know or the experiences they had. But we donât follow a building or the people in it, we follow Christ. Thatâs why we are at...
Read moreTenth church is a place where the atmosphere is quite unusual for a religious institution. The loud music that sounds like a rock concert with an electric guitar and a band with their loud drums at the beginning of the service might be a bit overwhelming for some people. I had to wear earplugs to prevent hearing damage. It could be a turnoff for those who are looking for a more traditional and peaceful environment to worship.
Tenth church is more of a place where people go to socialize rather than taking religion seriously. If you're looking for a community of individuals who are genuinely interested in deepening their faith and spirituality, this church may not be the right fit for you.
Furthermore, it is concerning that I have observed some attendees of the Tenth church acting like hypocrites with unchristian attitudes outside of the church. I know all of these people at my workplace with these unchristian attitudes which I will not name who attends Tenth church. This suggests that some members may not be embodying the values and principles that they profess to believe in during their time at church.
Overall, it's important to find a church that aligns with your values and beliefs. If you're someone who wants a religious institution that promotes a more traditional and peaceful environment, the Tenth church might not be the best option for you. It's always a good idea to do your research and attend a few services before committing to a particular church community such as...
Read moreI have called the Third Service (Tenth's evening service) home for the past seven years, after having recently arrived to Vancouver from a small town in the interior of British Columbia. I was drawn by the vibrant worship and the intimate setting for prayer, preaching, and fellowship. The community I have found at Tenth is authentic, and has been a profound encouragement in my faith journey. This community has moved beyond Sunday evenings in the form of intentional friendships, ministry opportunities, and small groups, to become a place where I am known by Christ and by others, and where I am continually encouraged to grow in my relationship with God.
There are many things that I am grateful for regarding Tenth, from their emphasis on living life authentically for Christ, to their focus on the arts and social justice. The teaching is sound, engaging, and thought-provoking. I am also greatly appreciative of the diversity of Tenth. The people who attend represent a wide variety of cultures, life experiences, economic backgrounds, and faith journeys. This helps me to tangibly feel part of the larger body of Christ, as well as encourages me to hear about God's work in the lives of others.
More than all of these things, however, I call Tenth home because there I have found a community of believers who are thirsting for God, yearning to know Him better, and despite all the imperfections and brokenness that are often highlighted by community, desire to live life...
