Golden Ocean has been our go to dim sum restaurant for over twelve years. For accessibility, food, service, and price, it’s hard to beat. It fills up quickly on weekends after 11am, so call the day before and make a reservation. Compared to other Chinese restaurants we’ve gone to dim sum for, Golden Ocean is very reliable with reservations. You might have to wait a bit if it’s full, but not too long. You can park in the underground lot but it is a tight squeeze when busy. I’ve always parked in the underground lot for London Drugs/Kerrisdale station. There is free parking on the west side of East Blvd south of West 42nd. Once seated, you’ll notice this is one of the few places left that have cart service. It definitely has it’s charms but you can always order from the wait staff. We do that when something we want doesn’t come out promptly. Golden Ocean is straightforward dim sum with all the usual suspects. They will offer Jasmine tea first, but you can ask for others. We almost always get the trifecta of har gow/shrimp dumplings, (pork) sui mai, and cha siu bao/steamed bbq pork buns and go from there. For this meal my family wasn’t so hungry. We got: wu gohk/taro root dumplings-first time I’ve had this with mushrooms inside-nice; hom siu gok/glutinous rice dumplings-footballs is a common term for these-wonderfully crisp on the outside, some have curry spice inside, these don’t; nor mai gai/sticky rice in lotus leaf-a good amount of mixed proteins and an egg yolk; fu pei guen/steamed bean curd rolls-some have ham, these don’t-try with mustard; har gow/shrimp dumplings-great with chilli sauce; cheung fun/rice roll-they have a few options but we get mushroom-after trying many different ones, Golden Ocean’s has the most amount of filling and I think three types of mushrooms; cha siu bao/steamed bbq pork buns; and because this was our Chinese New Year meal, I had to get a plate of three fried cakes-lo bak go/turnip cake, wu tao go/taro cake, and mah tai go/water chestnut cake-this time they fried the water chestnut one more than usual which I really liked as it gave it deeper flavour and some crisp edges. We skipped the sui mai and dessert (egg tarts, sponge cake, and thousand layer cake are our favourites). You can’t go wrong at Golden Ocean, and you can take a nice walk in Kerrisdale or up/down the Arbutus Greenway path...
Read moreAfter today's experience, I don't think I'll ever come back here again. The service is terrible and the staff is mean and rude. The worst of all, is the fact they DEMAND TIPS, even though they technically can't ask for it (and quite honestly, they don't deserve it!)
We waited for almost 10 min and had to waive non stop until someone finally seated us (even though there was no line up and the restaurant was nearly empty). Took another 10min for someone to come take our order. The mid-aged waiter with black-rim glasses was really rude to us, and even said "What do you want?" The food was ok.. but the turnip cake (lo bok go) was burnt, really dry, and even had a hard and crunchy texture.. When we went to pay for the bill, it was $35.05 so my boyfriend gave the lady $40 cash and a nickel for the 5 cents. He had coins in his pockets so he was going to tip using those coins. So he asked the lady to give him a 5 dollar bill back. But the lady misunderstood him and thought he was not going to tip her... and said "You need to tip", and was not giving him any changes! My boyfriend can't speak Cantonese or Mandarin, so he tried telling her he will give her tips with his own coins, but the lady did not understand English and just kept saying "You need to tip", "You need to tip"! "It's not enough tip"! In the end my boyfriend got it sorted out but it was just such a terrible experience!!
It's not like we were not going to tip them, if anyone knows my boyfriend, he is the most generous tipper. But the fact that they just assume we were not going to tip and walk away, or the fact they just DEMAND the tips, just make me so upset. And this is not the only time they demanded tips....
The other time we came to the restaurant for seafood Christmas dinner. I think the group tipped about 15% total but the lady at the cashier "refused to let us leave" and tried to keep us in the restaurant until we paid up 25% tips. They kept saying "Not enough tip, not enough"...... *Shake my head *.... I am definitely not going back again, regardless how good their...
