We made a reservation for a Saturday dinner two weeks in advance, hoping for a special night. Given the high cost of dining out, this wasn't something we do often; we were really looking forward to enjoying some wine and tapas. Based on great recommendations and our positive experiences with their coffees and pastries at the Mount Pleasant location, we were excited to treat ourselves.
We live in East Van, so heading all the way to West Broadway was a bit of a trek, but we thought it would be worth it for a memorable evening. We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation, only to find the restaurant completely empty. The staff, who were cleaning at the counter, didn’t acknowledge us, so we stood there for about two minutes before someone came out and told us the restaurant was closed.
When we mentioned we had a reservation, he explained that they had to close because some staff members were on vacation. My partner asked why we weren’t notified ahead of time, especially since OpenTable had sent a text confirming our reservation that very day. The young man, who identified himself as the manager, admitted he had just returned from vacation and forgot to cancel the bookings.
To make up for the inconvenience, he offered us two free coffees and a $20 gift card. While that’s nice, it doesn’t change the fact that we spent $25 on an Uber to get there, only to have to spend another $25 on an Evo ride back home. That’s $50 and an hour of our time that could’ve been easily avoided if they had managed their reservations and communicated any changes in advance. This experience felt like a lack of care or attention to their customers and really left us...
Read moreWe came on a Thursday morning around 10 and the place was pretty empty. We had the orange mocha, flat white, de Nata, guava goat cheese pie and a turkey bacon sandwich.
The coffee that we got was not bad. Strong flavours in the orange mocha. The beans in the flat white were very prominent.
The Portuguese egg tart was okay. The filling was delicious and well balanced with that hint of cinnamon but I would have liked it more if the crust was a little more flakey (but that's just my preference).
The guava goat cheese pie was delicious. The pie pastry on the outside was buttery and flakey. The filling was an interesting combination. The guava jam was my favourite part. Most of the inside was goat cheese and I would have liked a bit more guava jam for some balance.
The turkey bacon sandwich was well priced for the size you get. The ciabatta bread was not overly chewy and held the fillings well. The bacon was crunchy and there was a lot of arugula and tomatoes inside to keep it fresh. The salad on the side was a pleasant surprise. I loved the citrusy brightness of the dressing.
Overall the service was super nice and informative. The food came out really fast. Would definitely recommend this coffee shop for the food and would come back...
Read moreWe had high hopes for this place. We got the breakfast sando and the turkey bacon sando and two lattes. The day we came the baker “wasn’t in” so we couldn’t try any of the pastries…. For $60 this place left so much to be desired.
Let’s start with the good stuff. The coffee and the lattes were good. The flavour was nice. Temperature was perfect. All around quite good (as a bit of a coffee snob). We really liked the lattes and would come back for them. The atmosphere is also nice. We sat on the covered patio outside and they had some nice soul music playing.
Now the food. The breakfast sando was alight. It wasn’t bad by any means! The egg was TINY. And for the price, most of the sandwich was straight up bread. I should have known because when we got there, my boyfriend and I both noticed a table that a couple left both their buns, but everything else eaten. The bread itself wasn’t even great either. Ours was slightly stale. Assuming theirs was too and that’s why they left it.
The turkey sando was better. It was a good basic turkey sandwhich but nothing special for $20.
Would come back for the coffee and to try...
