I recently placed an order through DoorDash from Kim Phung, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to reconnect with this incredible restaurant after 8 years. Back in high school and my young adult years, this was my go-to spot for authentic Vietnamese food. Now, after more than two decades of serving the community, Kim Phung remains one of the true OGs of Vancouver’s Vietnamese food scene.
The moment I called to place my order, I was greeted warmly by the staff, and the friendly lady on the phone instantly remembered me when I introduced myself as the half-Vietnamese, half-German guy. Her excitement to hear from me was a testament to the genuine customer service that Kim Phung is known for. I asked about the Bun Bo Hue and whether it came with lots of meat, and she immediately assured me that she’d make it extra special for me. It felt like being treated like a VIP, just as I always was when I ate there in the past.
The food quality has been consistently excellent throughout the years, and I have no doubt it will be just as delicious as I remember. From their signature Bánh Bột Lọc Trần (tapioca dumplings with shrimp and minced pork wrapped in banana leaves) to the Bún Bò Huế (a rich and flavorful spicy beef noodle soup), every dish is a masterpiece. Their vermicelli dishes with shredded pork are a must-try, and don’t even get me started on their refreshing shakes — these are an absolute highlight.
Kim Phung isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a piece of Vancouver's culinary history. For anyone looking for authentic, tasty Vietnamese food with service that makes you feel like family, this place is a gem. Here's to many more years of great meals — I will...
Read moreSmall family restaurants seem to be in decline and it was nice to discover Kim Phung. It was a delight.
The restaurant is very small, with only a dozen or so tables. It is not polished, modern, or new. Overall, we found it to be clean and well kept. There is wear noted and some clutter that seems to accompany long established family operations. Overall, there was nothing unexpected in the decor and it was fun watching the Paris By Night concert they had playing on the TV. It's an experience.
This is a family run restaurant, so service comes with genuine care and attention. We were greeted by a more senior member of the family who seated us and gave us menus with cups of tea. A younger family member then came to take our order and she remained our server for the meal. We felt like we were visiting friends and sitting in the dining room of their home. It was pleasant and relaxed.
The food was excellent. To say it was tasty seems to be too hasty a word to describe the layers of flavor that were on offer here. The menu is robust and there are numerous dishes on offer that have virtually disappeared from modern Vietnamese restaurants. We appreciate Kim Phung keeping these dishes available.
We give Kim Phung our highest rating and a strong recommendation. It's not perfect or trendy, and family run restaurants have a different approach to business. While we were there, three generations were present (even a child playing at a table near the back). Go, sit, and soak up something a little different. I don't think you will regret it. We will be...
Read moreAuthentic Vietnamese experience. You get lime, not lemon...small Thai red chilies 🌶, not sliced jalapenos...free hot tea, iced if you want. All sauces at the table: -fish sauce -soy sauce -chili oil -garlic chili sauce -hoisin sauce -sriracha hot sauce The food was done very well...exactly what I would expect if I were in Vietnam. Portion sizes are adequate, and price is fair. We ordered two vermicelli bowls: #33 (Grilled chicken, pork chop, and BBQ minced pork) #40 (Grilled pork & shrimp sugar cane) ... If you want a thick slice of pork, ask for the pork chop, otherwise the grilled pork is thinly sliced with crispy bits. Both are super tasty! Don't expect perfection here, but due to the authenticity, I'm rating very high. This is a...
