I don't always write restaurant reviews, but this memorable experience certainly warranted one.
So where to begin? The waitresses weren't great at communicating. One waitress indicated that there wouldn't be an extra charge for certain drinks, so we ordered them only to be told by the other waitress that it would be an extra $3. Not the best start, but it was fine and we went ahead and changed our drink orders.
The bowls of noodles were definitely large, but the soup was lacking flavour and quality of the beef was not great. My friend and I ordered the tomato soup, but hers tasted ketchup-y whereas mine only had a hint of fishy-ness. How does the same soup taste entirely different especially when they were ordered at the same time? Unfortunately, both tasted quite bland and were mediocre at best.
In another bowl, we found a piece of raw pork in it. The waitress shrugged it off and took it away to heat it up. They came back 20 minutes later with the cooked piece of pork on a plate. Another friend ordered BBQ pork in their noodle soup, only to get boiled pork with no signs of BBQing. Surely it must have been a mistake with the order? Unfortunately, the only mistake was my friend ordering BBQ pork and expecting BBQ pork. Perhaps something was lost in translation? We had ordered extra cilantro in another bowl, but the bowl came out with no cilantro.
By this point, we started wondering "What else could they mess up?" Well unfortunately for us, the answer to that question came quickly. When the drinks came out, they messed up our order and gave us the wrong drink. By this point, we were the only patrons in the restaurant and you would hope that it wouldn't be too difficult to get five drinks correct. I ordered a cold ovaltine drink but I would describe it as a lukewarm cup of water with a dash of ovaltine. It was watered down and I drank about 3 sips before I gave up on it. Some of us ordered lemon iced tea and while it looked fine, it tasted like they used the wrong type of tea to make it. Realistically, this shouldn't be a point against them but it didn't taste great and we had already lost all our hope for this restaurant by this point.
Sadly, this was only a subset of the issues we encountered with the food. We left without finishing most of our food or drinks because it was so unappealing and we were so disappointed with the experience. Save your time and money and don't make the same regretful mistake...

As soon as we walked in (English speaking) the server gave attitude. Once someone came who spoke Cantonese the service was a tad better but still terrible.
Went with a group of 7 people, only got one order list. Had to ask 3 times to get the papers which took 20 mins just to get 6 papers...when we asked the 3rd time the server literally said "ai ya" like we were a nuisance after waiting 20 mins just to order.
First bowl came shortly after, the wrong noodles came but we accepted it anyways without saying anything. Serving size was good and generous (was going to give 2/3 stars but the additional issues they deserve a solid 1).
2 more bowls came 20 mins after, which were actually both correct with the order (the only ones). 2 more came 10 mins after that. They were incorrect toppings.
The last two bowls came about 1 hour and 30 later...asked for no cilantro/green onions but got both. The soup base was completely wrong. We asked one server and she didnt help or do anything except try to fight that we were wrong. After we brought all the papers she realized it was incorrect as the soup based didnt add up. So at the end she said "so are you going to take it?" Then walked away.
Another server came to the rescue and fixed the order.
2 hours later and the last bowl was corrected.
Didnt get our drinks which come with the order until over two hours later. The milk tea was extremely bitter.
The desserts never came but it was already over 2 hours at the restaurant so we didnt want to waste any more time fighting them since we already know how their service was.
Asked for two take out containers and the server happily took our bill and added 50 cents promptly (didnt warn us that it costs extra but its 50 cents so no biggie). We waited 10 more minutes and the containers never came so we walked up to the front to get it on our own from the server. She gave one lid....had to go back for the 2nd lid.
Paid up but given the lack of service and missing desserts we PAID for we gave no tip. She made a remark to her other server and that was the night.
Definitely stay away as you wont get any food that you actually ordered and get attitude...
Read moreDropped in with my elderly parent after some lab work in the area. We will not visit again. The proprietress was busy talking in Toisan dialect (Cantonese variant) on her cellphone about banal topics (eg.Gucci handbags) when we arrived around 3:45pm and during the entire time we were there.
The cook who was having his afternoon meal acknowledged us and asked us to sit at any table. We then waited 5-10 minutes before asking for a menu. Proprietress didn’t even notice or hear our request. She was busy on her cellphone call but when she finally got up, we again asked for menus. She reluctantly brought over some menus and our cups of tea.
Filled in the paper menu form for the $15.99 noodle combo meal where you choose a soup base, type of noodles and 2 items (vegetables, meat or fish) plus a hot beverage. Proprietress was still on her cellphone when she picked up our completed paper menu forms.
Noodles arrived about 10-15 minutes later. Way too salty and way too much MSG, so we did not finish our noodles. Proprietress also forgot our hot beverages so I had to remind her. She only filled our HK style hot milk teas 3/4 full in paper cups.
With the non-existent service and having missed providing our hot beverages which is included in the $15.99 noodle combo, I decided to not leave a tip. I usually tip 10% even when the service is mediocre, but the service we received today was non-existent so 0% tip. The proprietress then had the audacity to point out in Cantonese that we didn’t leave her a tip. I responded that we received no service today other than her bringing out the 2 cups of tea and 2 bowls of noodles. We had to continuously ask for the menu and hot beverages.
Unfortunately my elderly parent was far more forgiving and left an 12% tip, which further annoyed me. I definitely will never return nor recommend Shun Fa Noodle House!
Note that this establishment only takes...
