I'm a polite 67 year old woman. This morning I was in the UBC neighbourhood so drove to see if this restaurant was open. Yes, the two red electric signs in the window said "Open", so I parked my car, paid $1.00 pay by phone, opened the restaurant door and went in - but all the chairs were stacked on the tables and the owner was saying we're closed. I said the signs say "Open" and the door is open - I said I think you should reimburse me the $1.00 parking, and he went full-on crazy on me - absolute face-exploding freak-out - loud shouting, waving his hands close to me, threatening to call the RCMP!! I would have been amused if it hadn't been scary. When I left I mentioned the incident to someone standing outside and while we were talking, the owner shut off the "Open" signs, flipped the door sign around to "closed" and locked the door. It's not the $1.00 that matters - it's just such bad customer service. If I was the owner, I would have happily reimbursed the $1.00 parking and given the customer a voucher for some free food. Needless to say, I will NEVER go...
Read moreOrdered their 19-piece sashimi platter to go ($24.95). We took a look around at the other sushi places in the surrounding blocks and Sun Sushi offers the best value for a large sashimi platter. A menu from a year ago shows that the price for this combo was ~$20, so prices have gone up, but it's still the best value for the large sashimi combo.
The quality of the fish itself was good. The fish tasted fresh (or were at a temperature that made them taste meaty without being too fishy), which was pleasantly surprising given the price and the general, casual atmosphere of the place. There were 3 types of fish that had 3 slices while the rest of the sashimi was 2 slices (including scallop and octopus!), for a total of 8 different seafood varieties. The only complaint I had was that the octopus was poorly sliced; one of the slices was really thick at one end while the other slice was thin overall.
At dinnertime when we picked up our order, there weren't as many people in this restaurant as the neighboring sushi place, but don't be fooled - it's tasty and the value...
Read moreAs advertised! I went with a friend and ordered the spicy sushi combo which included "17 pieces of spicy scallop roll, spicy dynamite roll, and spicy tuna roll." The restaurant was cozy with all booth seating, and on one side of the wall, there were shelves for storing belongings. The table we were seated at had the shelves.
The server was nice and offered free green tea, as well as kept our cups refilled throughout our meal. At the end, my total came out to be a bit more than $1 for each piece of sushi. The combo was filling, but the quality was not as good as I would have liked. I thought the sashimi was going to be marinated in a spicy sauce, or that the other ingredients inside the rolls were going to be spicy, but the only element that made it spicy was the sauce they drizzled on top at the very end. I think the...
