Not your average 'hole in the wall' sushi place. By far one of the best plates of spicy tuna sashimi we have ever enjoyed. Their house green salad was also excellent. After telling the staff (and chef) how delicious everything tasted so far we were told that most if not all of their sauces are made in house. This definitely made a big difference in the overall flavor for everything we tried that had some sort of sauce or sauce drizzle garnish. We dined here fairly late; around 930pm - and were happy to see the full menu still be available (they close at 10pm). We had the tata-tuna roll, green salad, spicy tuna sashimi and sockeye salmon sashimi along with the ebi sunomono. Surprisingly the sunomono was also a favorite; the presentation was very clever (3 bundles of rice noodles tied up into a knot) and the vinaigrette was delicious and perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. All the staff are extremely friendly and even at close to closing time we never felt rushed to leave. We were out of there in about 20 minutes. A great example of good food, fast. Would definitely recommend. A wall of booths, plus some 4 tops and a couple seats near the window. Varied menu but not too big. They offered the typical stuff along with their house rolls/specials. Can't wait to go back for the salad...
Read moreMost people haven't had the chance to try "real" Japanese food, and therefore, it's relatively easy for anyone to claim that what they serve at their location is Japanese. As expected, many of these establishments will have sushi on their menus. To be clear, sushi in Japan is an art, an expensive art. Chefs specializing in sushi learn the craft over many years, and only when they have mastered the different steps, will they dare to serve it. A very high percentage of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver serve sushi, but a very mediocre dish. It all starts with the fish, it has been frozen, and when thawed, if the quality was not there to begin with, it will be bland and favourless. Then there is gohan (rice), lightly vinegared for sushi, a very important element. If none of these 2 ingredients are good, cut properly, etc., etc. Then what you have is a dissapointing experience. At Sushi Main, such was the case. They need to do better if they want to survive in a very competitive niche, there's way too many Japanese restaurants...
Read moreI wanted to try them so I called at 9:00 for dinner - their website hours list them as being open til 10. When I said that I wanted to place an order for delivery, the woman on the other end said "Just a minute". I could hear her as she asked someone nearby "Do you want to do a delivery?" but not the response they gave. When she came back on the phone she said "Sorry, we're closed", making it abundantly clear that they were just too lazy to actually go out the door. When I said that the website's hours had them open for another 60 minutes, she just said "Sorry, we're closed today" again. Real...
