Flaming Kitchen near Vaughan Mills brings that cozy-meets-chic Korean vibe from the moment you step in. The decor feels stylish yet inviting, with warm wood accents and pops of Korean design that make you want to linger. On a cooler day, I probably would have. Unfortunately, with today’s heat index, the air-conditioning was fighting a losing battle, and by the end of the meal we were all glistening like freshly steamed dumplings. That aside, the ambiance is very much in line with a modern Korean comfort food spot. We started with the sizzling corn and sizzling spicy rice cake, both arriving on hot plates that instantly amped up the appetite. The corn was cheesy without being cloying, and I appreciated that it wasn’t soggy—each kernel still had a bit of bite. The spicy rice cake was perfectly chewy, coated in a sauce that struck a balance between heat and flavor, with the cheese melting into every bite. It was indulgent without being overwhelming, the kind of starter you keep picking at even when you tell yourself to save room for the mains.
Next came the popcorn chicken and the Flaming-style Japanese chicken. Both were a hit, but the Japanese chicken stole my heart. Juicy, perfectly cooked meat encased in a crisp exterior with seasoning that gave it an umami punch—this one had depth beyond just “fried chicken.” The popcorn chicken was equally enjoyable, light yet flavorful, and not greasy at all. It’s rare to find fried chicken that doesn’t leave you reaching for napkins every two seconds, and here they’ve nailed it.
For the mains, the honey beef garlic stood out for its tenderness and sweet-savory balance, though the portion size left me wanting just a little more. The curry pork cutlet rice came with a homey, aromatic curry, but I learned the hard way that the sauce soaks quickly into the breading, making it soggy. Next time, I’d ask for the sauce on the side to preserve that initial crunch. The unagi teppanyaki rice was flavorful, but the eel’s texture leaned slimy for my taste—something I’ve not encountered in other places. That said, eel lovers might enjoy it just fine. The salmon and shrimp rice was my least favorite, not because it was bad, but because it felt plain and the plating had too much empty space, making it look like it came straight from a quick lunch box rather than a sizzling kitchen.
The popcorn chicken rice redeemed things in a big way. Imagine the same addictively crispy popcorn chicken from the starter, but now generously piled over rice. The serving was huge, the chicken stayed crunchy, and the seasoning carried through every bite. If you’re someone who loves hearty comfort food, this dish alone could be your reason to come back.
To cool down, we had the lychee yoghurt soda, which was exactly the refreshment I needed after so many sizzling plates. The lychee flavor was vibrant and sweet, the yoghurt added a creamy tang, and the soda gave it a playful fizz. It was a surprisingly perfect pairing to the heavier dishes.
Overall, Flaming Kitchen is an easy recommendation for those who love Korean comfort food at wallet-friendly prices. The food is flavorful, the service is warm and attentive, and the variety on the menu means there’s something for every mood. Just be prepared if you visit on a hot day—you might end up sweating as much as you’re smiling. With better temperature control and small tweaks to texture and portioning, this place could easily become one of the top casual dining spots...
Read moreBeen here twice, once for a meal and another for quick snacks. The snack items were quite appealing and shareable, my favourite was popcorn chicken and cheesy corn. The food comes in different varieties, from noodle dishes, noodle soup dishes, and rice dishes. These dishes can be customized, but the common selections are listed with colourful pictures as guide.
Not every dish looks like the colourful pictures, though. My friend ordered super deluxe teppanyaki rice dish, but he commented that the picture had more meats than what was on the plate. There wasn't enough sauce on his rice, and extra sauce would have cost him extra. My curry pork cutlet udon was great, though, warm and comforting during a cold day. The pork was tender and complemented well with the curry broth. Cheesy flaming chicken noodle was also a solid choice, as it was warm and spicy enough to make you sweat.
Value was mixed. My curry udon was a good value, but most of the snacks and the super deluxe teppanyaki rice felt overpriced for the portion size. I would recommend going with good friends and share the food around the table, so everyone could try different...
