Halibut House is a place that specializes in our beloved fish & chips. A small establishment from Port Perry that grew over the past decade to become a large fish & chip franchise in Ontario. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but inspired our fish appetite!

Haddock & Chips order had an impressively sized fish fillet piece along with plenty of thick cut fries underneath. For takeout, we were peeved that they used pre-packed condiments for tartar sauce rather than provide some homemade or dine-in option. But the fish itself was golden & crunchy on the outside with pleasant flaky fillet texture inside. Well worth it, and they even offer $11 Sun/Mon specials.

As for the Halibut & Chips, we were sadly underwhelmed by our first attempt. The fish is firm, mild in flavour with perhaps a little bit of sweetness. It tasted rather bland. We may have to try it fresh to see if it's an acquired taste. Otherwise we'll stick to cod/haddock. The fries accompanying both were a tad soggy but did a bit better with a splash of S&P.

To be honest, we've had comparable fish & chips elsewhere. We've even started to rely on our own air fryer at home to cut some grease. However, for convenience it's good to know that Halibut House is a fish & chip option just a stone's throw...

Visited Thursday, June 30 for Dine In around 7PM

I had a hankering for fish and chips and decided to try out this chain as it was in the area and I'm trying to find a local fish and chips joint for just these occasions.

If I can be really honest it's nothing special. Found the fries just alright, and there was nothing special about the Halibut or the batter.

Maybe this isn't fair as my favourite fish and chips places are around Eglington and the North York area that are institutes but I will say if I'm really craving fish and chips and can't be bothered to go down there I will come back here.

The menu is extremely extensive and we liked how many options there were for sides because some people can't have the chips.

Clean place. Lots of seating. Quick service. And the customer service was extremely friendly - I should have gotten our servers name.

Overall, not a bad place, I noticed a lot of families come here and there's a decent amount of takeout.

Back in May 2022 I would have given 5 stars because the food was great back then. Today I brought my family for lunch and it was less than satisfactory. The batter appeared to have thinned out compared to my previous experience. The grilled halibut was extremely thin and tough/chewy. I can tell it was a frozen piece of fish that was thawed and partially cooked in the microwave, then over-cooked on the pan. This is not what “grilled fish” is supposed to be. Awful! As I was pressed for time I ended up eating it anyway, but this was a terrible experience. The California style veggies were likewise frozen veggies that were steamed. You can tell, there’s a taste and texture to frozen veggies, particularly the carrots. The only reason why I’m not giving a 1 star is because the server was nice and the chowder was decent. I really hope the owners clean up the kitchen practices. I don’t think we...

Great spot if you’re craving a classic fish and chips experience. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the batter was light and crispy. I had the cod, while my friends ordered the haddock and halibut. We tried each other’s dishes, and all of them were excellent. Cooked just the way I like. To top things off, the coleslaw was amazing: light, refreshing, and with the perfect crunch. Its sweet and tangy flavor balanced the richness of the dish beautifully. Overall, it really hit the spot! You could tell the chips were made fresh in house, too. They provided ample tartar sauce along with the classic salt-and-vinegar accompaniments for the chips. The portion sizes were very generous. I even had enough to take some home and enjoy later. The space is clean and bright, and the service is exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend checking this place out if you need your fish and chips fix!

New location freshly opened Feb 8. There is a large parking lot with easy access to the store. The staff here is very friendly even with the rush of dine in and take out. I took advantage of the BOGO half price fish and chips (no seafood plates) and tried the Halibut and Chips. The fish and fries were freshly prepared and well cooked. The fish was moist with a nice crunch batter and the fries were double fried for a nice crunch exterior with a fluffy centre that paired perfectly with malt vinegar. The staff be it front of house to the chefs at the back crafting up the yummy goodness are masters of their craft. Will visit to try out the other fish offerings and even the combo platters (breakfast maybe a stretch for a person that enjoys sleeping in)
