Whenever my family visit White Rock beach, we always stop at Moby Dicks for either dine in or take out fish and chips. It has also become a tradition with friends and family from out of town. The fish and chips are solid and the extra piece with each order adds value.
The service either with dine in or take out is always adequate, not overly friendly but also not rude or difficult in any way. That changed tonight when the staff was disorganized and unprofessional.
Tonight, after the Bright Walk Tree lighting festival we planned to stop by Moby Dicks on the way back home to grab dinner. When we got to the restaurant my father-in-law and I checked in with the restaurant to see about the wait time for a table for four. We were told that a table was just paying and would be available shortly. I informed our server that I would go grab the rest of our party and my FIL would wait in the restaurant until the table was ready.
I went back to the car and gathered my wife, our 4yr old and 4-month-old son. When I returned to the restaurant 5 minutes later, I found my FIL, a senior, standing outside in the cold. I asked him why he was not at a table, and he shared that a different server had asked him to wait outside in the cold windy weather and took his name and number down and would call him when a table became available. We waited with him outside for another 10 minutes during which time another party of three entered the restaurant and that party was seated immediately at a four top at which we could have sat.
When I went back in to inquire as to why we had been left to wait the server that I had previously spoken with told me there was that had been ready, but they were waiting for us and that they do not come outside to check.
Clearly the servers do not talk to each other as why one would send my FIL to stand in the cold when the other said a table was just being cleaned and he could have sat down and warmed up. The biggest issue I had was that when they realized this had happened there was no apology, no concern, no care whatsoever. Had they shown any semblance of concern for their error I would have chalked it up to them having an off night and moved on. Without any form of apology it shows that they do not care and do not understand the industry they work in.
Unless an apology is offered, we will not be going back and will explore the many other fish and chip restaurants along the drive. Will report back with a positive review and recommendation once we have had the opportunity to try another fish and chip restaurant.
If you are looking for fish and chips at White Rock beach I’d recommend you do the same as although Moby Dicks makes some solid fish and chips, their service is strongly lacking and it makes sense to give your money to another restaurant that will value...
Read moreI traveled specifically to White Rock BC just to go to this restaurant for fish and chips after hearing great things about them and seeing that they had been open since 1975.
Sadly we were disappointed. I really just wanted a special lunch with my little girl, something she would remember later on in life !
The culture and atmosphere from the street looked incredible but there was no way i would get my wheelchair into the restaurant without help and the staff didnt seem to want to make it happen so we took the food to go. I would of loved to see the inside and embrace the rich history of this historic restaurant.
We looked at the take away menu shown from the road and was completely shocked at the price for Fish & Chips. Not sure if the fish was Cod or not.
Two piece fish and chips not including any condiments or soft drinks it was $24.99. WOW... Crazy even for White Rock !!!
We decided it must be worth it, so ordered two combos with one drink and two tarter sauces which came to $58.99 which was shocking. Completely bonkers.
The food came fairly quickly but when we looked at the food we were served, we later found out it actually came with three pieces of fish which made more sense with the price shown. I so wish I would of known that as I wouldn't of ordered two combos. Way way way too much food.
The actually fish & chips wasnt good. The fish had no flavour, the batter was soggy & very greasy, anlong with the fries were cooked right but again missing salt or flavour. By far the best thing about the lunch was the tarter sauce.... not sure if it is handmade or not.
Sadly I really wanted a great lunch at this restaurant as it looked incredible outside along with the rich history of the business but left disappointed.
I definitely want to try it again, as their is no way they would be still in business since 1975 with food tasting like the food I had.
Maybe just a bad day for the kitchen or change in their suppliers ?
Totally agree everyone is allowed a bad day but unfortunately so wish it wasn't when I wanted a special lunch...
Read moreWhen we were sat at our table the first thing I noticed was that there were chunks of food on the condiment bottles at the edge of the table. I also noticed that when I looked closer at the actual table there were crumbs and spills all over the side of the table where the condiments are so obviously when they are cleaning they don’t wipe down or even move the condiments to wipe underneath them which I found kind of gross. I tried not to let it get to me hoping that the food would be as amazing as a lot of reviews were saying. We ordered the captains platter or whatever it is which basically comes with a bunch of assorted seafood. When we got it I started eating my fish and then started to notice that inside there was a lot of liquid and when I peeled back the outside the batter was still mushy and uncooked on the inside and tasted doughy. I asked the waitress if that is how the fish is supposed to look and she told me the fish is brought in frozen so sometimes the moisture can make it kind of mushy inside?? I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen an episode of kitchen nightmares where Gordon Ramsey said that you shouldn’t fry things while they are frozen, maybe they aren’t defrosting fish before cooking? I was pretty surprised finding out a well known and decently rated restaurant directly across from the ocean doesn’t serve fresh fish. The waitress brought me another peace of fish that was supposedly supposed to be well done after but I had the same problem with liquid inside. I didn’t eat the replacement she brought me and when she came back she offered to give me yet another piece of fish to take home but I just really didn’t want anything at that point since the first fix wasn’t any better. Overall extremely disappointed. Waitress comped one piece of fish out of the 3 on our platter. Still ended up paying 53 dollars before tip for 2 people. Not the waitresses fault but she wasn’t really surprised...
