This review is solely based on their banquet (downstairs) food & service.
My family had rented out the banquet on New Years eve. We were told beforehand that they would supply tablecloths for $3 per table, but not supply the following: extra cups for drinks i.e. alcohol (will get more into this), extra plates for desserts, and to also bring our own takeout boxes. Lastly, that we needed to obtain our own liquor permit. All these were met. Come Sunday, December 31st, we get there it's freezing cold but we looked past that. Not great, but this was a dinner & dance event so we'd eventually warm up. We were a party of 70 people. Food comes out right at 6:30pm as scheduled. Not the greatest serving portions of food for $35 per head. First thing that bothered me was the tablecloths that we were told they could provide for $3 a table, unless we brought our own. We assumed these tablecloths would be actual white clothes, but no. What were set up were plastic Dollarama-type covers. I can confirm AT MOST these cost $1.25 at the Dollar Store. If we knew this is what they were going to provide, again for $3 a piece, we would have obviously supplied our own. After everyone finished eating, some of the tables including the one I sat at started to bring out our alcohol and cups we brought ourselves. After some time had passed, one of the staff members pulled aside my aunt (the organizer of our event) to say we needed to hide our alcohol and that they were now going to charge us $15 PER bottle. My aunt clearly confused, ended up settling to instead pay them $45 additional for all the bottles present. I can't confirm how many all the tables had in total, but my table had only two. Unsure why we were asked of this because we had a obtained our own permit, as requested by them. I was unfortunately not part of this conversation between my aunt and staff. We had a DJ who happened to be our family member, in charge of the music the entire night, which he had set up and everything. Skip to maybe an hour after dinner, and after the alcohol debacle, a staff member once again comes talks to my aunt to say they were now going to charge an ADDITIONAL $100 for electricity. All because of the DJ equipment, which had already been set up and we provided ourselves. This was never mentioned beforehand! They "waived" this, however, and instead said they were taking back the $100 gift card in lieu of the "electricity fee." This gift card was supposed to be bonus that was to be given to my aunt for booking. We did not fight this further. Again, we had paid $35 per head for a pre-set meal which consisted of shareable plates per table of the following: soup, fried rice, crispy chicken, vegetables, chowmein, breaded ribs, and shrimp. As you can imagine, that's a pretty hefty price for your average chinese restaurant. We are avid Dimsum Garden diners, but normally go for their actual dimsum/happy hour. Fast forward to 9:30pm, half the people including the kids are on the dance floor and kind of scattered, but other half sitting at our tables and chairs.. the two waitresses have started to come around and clearing the tables. One of them is DUMPING the scraps of food onto the table from each plate and only taking their plates & utensils. Meanwhile, myself and others are still sitting at our tables, eating desserts and having our drinks. I was confused, disgusted and annoyed at this point. Clean up was supposed to be at 11:30pm, because we had to be out right at midnight. We still had 2.5 HOURS until we were leaving. I can't say I've ever seen this type of service at any type of restaurant. We were not the type to start questioning this and continued on the night trying to enjoy our NYE.
This review is solely based on the banquet service/food we experienced. I can empathize this may be their first banquet at their new building location since their move, however, this doesn't excuse all the ridiculous expenses they were charging us for, in my opinion. I would hope the owner do better in future, and if they want to reach out, I'd be...
Read moreI usually would not take my time to write a review like this but I was absolutely appalled at the service we received at dim sum garden a few weeks ago. My family and I have been going here for 10+ years and I guess it has recently been taken under new management and moved to across the street. Firstly when we entered there was little to no greeting and they almost seemed annoyed they had to seat us. They sat us directly in front of the door when the entire restaurant was empty besides 1 other table. After seating us in the most disrespectful spot, it seemed as if two of the females working were kind of giggling to themselves and talking in a foreign tongue while staring at us. They never came to the table and had a male staff member serve us. Who was very polite. The food was standard dim sum and warm but did cool off quickly based off where we were seated. As other patrons entered we did notice how they were being sat in locations further from the door and were able to take off their jackets while eating. The 2 female employees served those tables and never once came to our table. It was impossible to flag down a server if they weren’t actively bringing you something, even the male staff member. As they walked through the dining room they made no effort to make eye contact with us. I had to get up to ask for more water and a drink, my sister got up to ask for more cutlery. I would never accuse an establishment of discrimination or racism but our treatment felt subpar to those around us and we are visibly afro-canadian. My family and I paid our 150$ tab and left without saying anything, although my mother was quite upset and wanted to. We will no longer being back to dim sum garden. They have lost...
Read moreDIM SUM GARDEN ON PEMBINA - Horrible Mother’s Day experience! The one star is not even deserving of such event, if I can give a negative star I would. Firstly, there were 13 people in our party and they refused to sit us on a ten-person table and moved us to the 8-person table. But they did give us enough for everyone however you could the imagine there were not enough space to move around and eat comfortably. We waited 40min for our order of food at this time we had no cutlery, no place setting and no teapot because we were told it was all used up. The most frustrating thing was watching other people that came after us getting their food and tea serve. At this point, all the kids were so hungry and only shared a small plate of noodles that finally came. Another of family 4 came and guess where they sat, at the 10-person table! Absolutely horrible! Even the family of 4 looked at us and saw our frustration. We finally stood up and couldn’t wait for our food any longer and complained to the manager. And he just stood there with no remorse and no apology and basically just shooed us away. If they can’t provide a great dining service and accommodate a bigger party, then let us know up front. We ate at Boston pizza and had a great meal and got an...
