Yesterday I witnessed a mean and cruel action by staff. A very pregnant Mom and her "I obviously really need to go" toddler came in and asked for the child to use the Washroom. The cold heartless woman whom another staff referred to as "The Boss" refused. The Mother acknowledged the sign on the door prohibiting the use of the Washroom by non-customers, but, tried to reason with the woman that this was an emergency. The woman still refused. The little girl was holding herself and squirming with need. The visibly upset Mom and crying child left. REALLY...a 2 yr old child is refused? Whatever happened to goodwill..or perhaps even an act of kindness? My husband (a well-established St James businessperson) & I live in the area. Our adult children & their families do too. You can rest assured that not only will this incident be told over and over again, but, we will never darken the doors of this establishment again. Shame on "The Boss" and shame on Joe Black Café...
Oh, and by the way, about 15 minutes later, I ran into the Mom on Portage Avenue and asked if they were ok....yes, she said...Star Grill had very graciously and without any hesitation permitted the child to use...
Read moreI used to go to this place a lot but the quality of everything has gone down a lot. Went in last week, place was a ghost town and I tried to head to the bathroom before ordering and some guy practically threw himself over the counter to make sure I wasn’t using the bathroom without buying something first (there are now 3 signs in each single stall that tell you to buy something). I got a drink and sat down for a while and I have never been in a restaurant in my whole life that had so many FLIES in it, it was absolutely disgusting having to constantly swat flies away from my drink INSIDE a cafe… Drink was only ‘okay’, I mostly used to go there for the location and atmosphere but considering the bad vibes and the flies I don’t see any reason to go there anymore. (I also think the door was broken for months? I thought the business had just closed down but maybe they’re just so broke now they can’t even keep up with the...
Read moreWalked up to the counter already knowing what I wanted to order. The young male cashier seemed to be fiddling with the register. He literally didn’t look up at me or say one word as I stood there waiting. Then an older female employee came over to ask if he needed her to make any food. He said no and then they both stood there still fascinated with the cash register. I was standing right at the counter this entire time. Neither of them looked up let alone made eye contact, or greeted me. It was as if I was invisible. After over a minute of standing there being totally ignored I turned around and walked out. I don’t care if employees were new or busy, it’s basic manners to acknowledge another human being if they’re three feet away. I would have been happy to wait if they needed a moment, but I felt like they were hoping I’d just go away so I did....
