DISSAPOINTING. I had driven past a Mr. Mikes while vacationing in Alberta last year & followed local press with the Winkler opening - so I was somewhat familiar with the offering of this chain. My wife & toddler went for dinner on Canada knowing this isn't Hy's, The Keg or even Rae & Jerry's. So expectation was what it was. Upon entry, the staff were polite with their greeting, almost a little too giddy (like high school kids at their first job). Whatever. Polite for sure. Our waiter (Andy) was attentive, but seemed unfamiliar with the menu when asked some basic questions about the menu offerings. We chose the dinner special for $32.99 (the triple feature). Seemed like decent value for a 6 oz steak with sides (Andy wasn't sure if the sides were included & seemed unsure if they were in fact inclusive...), and choice of 1 of 2 deserts (either cheesecake or brownie sundae as pictured on menu). We chose the cheesecake. Anyway, after ordering, our appetizer arrove about 20+ minutes later. He brought our Childs entree along with (we asked if he could serve that later with our main course...). In between courses, our waiter advised us that they were out of cheesecake (this is grand opening weekend, but I digress).Another 20-30 minutes after, our main course arrive (note: I wouldn't normally mind the spatial time in between if I were at 529 Wellington). At first bite, not bad. Steak was chewy (at best) and inclusive vegetables overcooked & bland. My wife & I each ordered our steaks medium-well. Her's was oozing blood still... Finally, after about 10-15 minutes, our waiter checked in to see how or "first bites are". My wife sent back her steak. I waited for my wife return steak (hoping they would promptly get it right the 2nd time). During our wait, another waitress came and delivered our cheesecake (that was out of stock apparently)! We advised this new waitress that we were still awaiting our main course (she was confused).... Shortly after, my wife main course was served (the original steak on her plate and sides....). We assumed the original steak she first bit into was simply put back on the grill and re-served. Not that we mind, but ewe! Can you imagine if the steak with her germs was next to someone else on the grill (just saying). Whatever, we carried on. For a restaurant with "steak" in its name, I would say that McDonalds could serve something equivalent in terms of taste and cut... Finally, after the main course, our dessert arrive again. We joked with our waiter that he must have pulled a few strings as we thought cheesecake was "sold out". The cake we were served came with whipped cream (it was liquid-like - as if it were sitting for a while -likely the same cheesecake the other waitress tried to serve us during our main course. At this time, we ordered some ice cream with sprinkles for our toddler. It never came... I must also add, we were never asked for refills and their appeared to be more staff on hand then customers (which is even more confusing). The staff also appeared quite confused as well, lots walking around, not sure what they were doing. We at least got to eat. I felt horrible for the elderly party of 6 next to us. They ordered shortly after us and still had not been served as we exited. They had confused & agitated looks on their faces. I can only imagine... I should note, I travel a lot, & dine as well. I can appreciate that this was the restaurants gran opening weekend. Hopefully they can figure it out (MANAGEMENT IT'S ON YOU). For a nearly $100 meal for 2 adults and a toddler (who had a grilled cheese sandwich) ad we didn't have any alcohol, we were extremely disappointed. Not only at the lack of value, but the overall experience. For a new entry into an already competitive dining market, it will be interesting to see how long this pace will last after the general publics curiosity dissipates. Spend a few bucks more and go to the Keg for a much better experience. Or, spend a few bucks less and go to Moxies, Montanas, or Earls. I should also note, this is my first time ever posting...
Read moreLast night (Wednesday, May 17, 2023), myself and six other family members dined at Mr.Mikes to try something new. Safe to say we will not back, as our dining experience was extremely underwhelming, to say the least.
Now, I understand that Mr.Mikes cannot be compared to Hy’s, 529, or even The Keg - considering the menu, price points, and very obvious cost-effective target market; however, Mr.Mikes is branded as a steak house and they failed to deliver the bare minimal expectation: providing a properly executed steak.
6/7 steaks were undercooked, and the only steak that was cooked properly was plated and given to the wrong guest. I ordered a med-rare, Chicago style rib-eye, but received a blue rare rib-eye that was not Chicago style. The same can be said for the 6 other guests at the table - all of the steaks were cooked several temps below what was requested. I brought this to the servers attention, to which she apologized, however, I had to request that my steak be placed back on the grill and cooked to appropriate temp. After the server removed my steak from the table, we realized that my brother in-law received my Chicago style rib-eye, which came out rare, when he had requested medium & not Chicago style. When I brought this to the servers attention, she simply apologized and did not ask if he would like it placed back on the grill, in addition to any other guests at our table.
The appetizers and cocktails were great; we had the bruschetta, kettle chips, spinach dip, sirloin bites, and stuffed mushrooms. I 10/10 recommend the bruschetta and kettle chips, and will absolutely give credit where it’s due; however, we dined at Mr.Mikes for steak and they simply did not deliver.
Aside from our meal, the service was also very disappointing. After expressing several concerns to our server, a manger did not stop by our table, which I found extremely odd. Service was also extremely slow, despite being seated next to the kitchen, and the restaurant being dead - there were maybe 2 other tables in the dining room. I'm not sure if our server was also serving in the lounge but she was not attentive. Our water glasses were not re-filled once, and no one was offered a second drink. When I requested a fork (after mine was taken away with the appetizer plates), it took several minutes to receive a new one. There were also instances where instructions were not followed, and items were not punched in. The mushrooms I added to my meal came directly on my steak, despite my request of having them on the side, and one of the two orders of cheese toast was not punched in but thankfully came out right away.
If I had a table of seven on a dead night that all ordered alcoholic beverages, multiple appetizers, “high” price-point dishes with several add-ons, I would be extremely attentive… but our server couldn’t care less and was too busy chatting with other employees in the expo/kitchen area.
I whole heartedly do not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for full-service and a well executed steak dinner. Perhaps their other (non-steak) dishes are better, but if that is the case Mr.Mikes should remove “steakhouse” from...
Read moreWe were in Portage La Prairie on Friday evening and looking for a place to eat. Since it was after 21:00 our choices were limited. While I usually stay away from the restaurant chains and prefer more friendly and less expensive options we gave Mike's a try. I was very apprehensive when I saw that the restaurant was empty aside from one table of 4. I asked them how the food was but they were reluctant to comment on it.
My wife's chicken sandwich meal was very good. The portions were reasonable and the sandwich was delicious and not outrageously expensive given the increased cost of everything.
My "Beef Dip" sandwich was an entirely different experience. The plate featured a huge bowl f what was supposed to be au jus, but it was in fact gravy. The featured bowl of gravy was flanked by a small sandwich and a handful of french fries.
The plate under the sandwich was a puddle of grease so the sandwich was sloppy and messy to handle. The "shaved" beef was in fact ground up fine so any attempt to dip it in the "au jus" resulted in the crumbled meat falling into the gravy and no longer something I wanted to fish for and eat.
I complained about the puddle of grease on my pate and how messy and difficult it was to eat. The waitress said it was all the butter from the sandwich... I said it made it sloppy and that it required bundling the sandwich in napkins in order to eat it. I said that the crumbled meat would not stay in the bun and it was impossible to dip without losing the meat.
When she returned with more napkins she told me that the puddle of grease was because of the marbling of the meat. Since the meat was already cooked and ground up I said that it could not have been responsible for the puddle on my plate.
At no point did she apologize nor did she offer to serve me something else or anything to try to provide good customer service. I was beyond disappointed with the quality of my food and I was stunned by the lack of customer service.
It's no suprise to me that there are a lot of poor reviews and a rating of 3.9 on the Googler
I am not sure what your business model is but in the hospitality industry and especially during these times, you should be trying to encourage return business and making an effort to impress new customers.
I am just glad that as a first timer I avoided the $40-50 steak option. My disappointment could have been much worse.
The $22 for a small 1/2 sandwich and a handful of fries was very poor value for money and was a huge disappointment. It was no surprise to me that when we drove past the following day at lunch time that the parking lot was empty but for 3...
