I had sent an email to Shorty's with my issue, as I did not intend to initially leave a negative review publicly, but rather privately via email, but since I did not hear back, I felt it now warranted leaving a review.
Upon the recommendation of friends who frequent this establishment, and had only good things to say, we had decided to visit Shorty's for dinner, and unfortunately for us, the experience was less than satisfactory.
Seldom can we make it out to that part of town as we live quite far, but we finally made it out. The staff were all perfectly friendly. The issue was with the meal.
We ordered the 18 inch veggie deluxe with the plant based cheese, extra sauce and half black olives instead of onions on one side.
The pizza arrived and looked great, but when we took a slice, the toppings would slide off in a rosé-type sauce, which basically just blended with the runny cheese, over the paper thin crust.
It's understandable that extra sauce will increase the likelihood of this happening, but what was not expected was how incredibly thin the centre of the crust would be, unable to hold the toppings. This has never been our experience when ordering such a pizza, so it would have been appreciated had we been informed about this (not to mention the $4 up-charge for extra sauce, which is fine, though not commonplace, and would have been great if we were informed about that beforehand as well!)
That said, none of the above was a dealbreaker, but due to the difficulty in handling a slice, our waiter kindly brought us a knife and fork, however the knife was pretty much impossible to cut with, and made one of the elderly party's wrist hurt, which hurt for days after (and which is what prompted this review).
As well, I am not sure what the standard amounts of toppings usually are, but the red pepper was very very sparse throughout. I'd count probably 1 or 2 pieces per slice.
Lastly, I had crunched down on something unpleasant, perhaps from the sauce. It was only once, and seemed like a piece of dirt or sand, though I'm not sure, but it was rather off putting.
It was a flavourful pizza otherwise, but the experience was compromised for the reasons mentioned above, which ultimately rendered it disappointing, and left something to be desired. What added insult to injury, is that they did not even reply to my email to show any concern. Not sure if I will be back,...
Read moreI had such high hopes and expectations for this place. I love both Detroit style and NY style pizza and have had both in their appropriate cities. Everything I have heard and seen looked killer! I really think I maybe had a bad night or maybe the delivery took too long.
I know generally a square pie is heavy on cheese low on sauce. I got a pepperoni pie so I knew it would be greasy. The crust and crumb was actually really nice but I think someone was too heavy handed on the cheese or the square tray wasn’t hot enough - The cheese crust hadn’t really formed and the majority of the cheese had slid off the pie and was congealed on the sides by the time I got it. The sauce, again, had great flavour - But there was little to none on the pie and it’s flavour was overwhelmed by what I assume to be brick cheese or a mix of cheddar. Seeing pictures of this from other reviews is very odd because I have seen them pull of what looks like a proper square slice. I wouldn’t be so hard on them but it was to a point it wasn’t edible as the cheese was hard and pooled all over the bottom and sides.
I also ordered a meatball sub. This was much better. The texture was right, I liked the sesame seed bun. No complaints, was a bit soggy but it’s delivery.
The NY slice was okay. There wasn’t much leoparding and it was a little thick. Again, really light on sauce (something I usually like, but this was a bit much.)
I really feel like it was an off day. I don’t mind paying for a good product - But considering the square pie was 33$ without tax in and I wasn’t even able to eat more than two slices isn’t really acceptable to me. I’m going to give them another try in the future though for a chance and will update my review accordingly. I really think they seem passionate about their product and others have sung it’s high praise - Maybe training a new staff or...
Read moreA first time patron, I enjoyed my dining experience at Shorty’s Pizza.
Located on the corner of Wolseley Ave and Maryland St., the restaurant offers pizza, pasta, soup, sides and an array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Walking along the checkered floor into a brightly sun-lit upper level, the space has ample seating for groups, couples and single diners alike.
The service is top notch. You’ll be served water right from the get-go with attentiveness, friendliness and smiles from service staff in abundance. When taking time to decide what to order, asking questions on the menu and building rapport as a customer, you can see that great care and pride is taken to assist each customer as best as possible. My server, she was excellent!
The pesto pasta, along with the tomato soup I ordered were delicious. The pasta was a generous portion; the soup served in a small French onion bowl. I took leftovers of both to enjoy for a second day.
Ambiance - there were 4-5 tables occupied and yet I could barely hear the other patrons. Our server flitted around assisting and chatting with various tables, while another staff member unobtrusively cleared the table over the course of my meal.
The music selection is a shuffled playlist curated by the staff. The mix of funk, dance, remixed classics, old and new upbeat tempos is surely to make anyone dance in their seats while eating. I know I was. And the volume was just right.
If you’re hankering for N.Y style pizza, a cold brew or smaller fare, come give Shorty’s Pizza a try. It may be exactly what you’re...
