I don’t know where all these rave reviews are coming from. I have eaten at many many sushi places from high end to mid tier. I wasn’t expecting high end sushi but I also wasn’t expecting grocery store type sushi for the price. Way too expensive for what it was and really bad!!
we got the gyu don, and two rolls. one was a shrimp tempura roll and the other was soft shell crab roll. I was skeptical to get any raw fish and thank god I didn’t
Firstly the order took 30 mins to come and making sushi doesn’t take that long but I guess its an island thing. The shrimp roll was so cold tasted like it has been in fridge thawed and served to us. It was also drenched in way too much eel and mayo sauce. The spider roll wasn’t even hot- its deep fried it should taste like it came out the fryer and fresh but it tasted also very cold. The soft shell crab was also very fishy.
Then we got a gyu don- which weve had many many gyudons before and this one was sooooo bad. It was clearly frozen steamed vegetables (broccoli carrots) and the meat was so Bland no taste whatsoever. It was like boiled beef that they pan seared, and on the bottom was PURE Soup/ broth. The whole dish and rice was drowned in broth which was weird cos gyudon is not a soup. It was like eating porridge. We told the waitress but she said thats how they make it there and she was kind enough to take It off the bill for us since we couldnt eat it. It definitely ruined our appetite.
We then ordered green tea ice cream and sticky toffee dessert. The green tea ice cream was definitely not green tea. It tasted like vanilla ice-cream with a hint of mint that was dyed green. The sticky toffee tasted like grocery store bought cake that they DROWNED in the toffee sauce. It was basically a bowl of soup of toffee sauce and cake on top. Wayyyy tooo sweet. Dont know what it is about this place but they like to drown all their...
Read moreNot too long ago, I ate at a beautiful Japanese restaurant and had amazing sushi. On one piece of nigiri, the chef used a highly reduced red wine sauce and applied a single drop onto an elegantly cut piece of white fish. The food was subtle, nuanced, and delicious. Yoshi is NOT this place.
Yoshi is more of an onomatopoeia of sushi: Bam, Pow! On their entire nigiri menu of dozens of selections, only three items contained actual raw fish and those were served cut-large on a log of rice. I asked the waiter for his recommendation on nigiri. He brought me cooked eel on rice overwhelmed with three different sauces. Yoshi is a place where there is a huge selection of specialty maki rolls, many with cream cheese, and covered with goopy sauces. I envision, instead of impeccable saucepans used for elegant reductions, in Yoshi’s kitchen, you see 330 ml plastic sauce bottles filled different colored sauces all just ready to be heaped onto the next order.
Yet here is what I find interesting. The place is stylish. The décor is hip, the atmosphere is warm, the staff was friendly. I get the sense that everyone running this place believes in what they are doing; it’s not like the lack of refinement is a gimmick, it is who they are. My wife and kids enjoyed their meal, we had lovely conversation, and, as a family, we left happy.
So, as I sat in Yoshi wishing beyond measure I was being served lovely sushi, I did not say a word to my family because they were having fun. I suppose it comes down to what you want because, the truth is, my family did not like the sushi at that beautiful Japanese restaurant that had the amazing reductions. Yoshi has it’s groove and everyone seemed to be having fun so who am I to superimpose my snobbery over them; other than to say, do not order the calamari appetizer; it was chewy and uninteresting – even the kids...
Read moreWish I could give this place ZERO (or negative) stars. We could not have been more disappointed. This is a burn and churn "Americanized" (not authentic, quality sushi) spot.
We've eaten sushi all over the world and have also worked in the restaurant business for a very long time, thus it's hard to even right this review as we try to be kind, understanding patrons no matter how bad a restaurant is.
This review wouldn't have been written had the manager not been super rude to us. We ordered a bunch of stuff, force fed it all even though it was all awful to be honest. Every piece of sushi had 4000 sauces and was just gross.
Due to the waitress not explaining a specific app appropriately, it was not what we expected (looked inedible). So we did not touch it, and asked if we could send it back and offered to pay 100% for it and took the blame as we understand being a part of the service industry.
The manager comes over and acts like we had some disease & wouldn't even address the fact that we didn't want the app and it wasn't explained properly. The poor waitress came back over and said she was trying to get it removed from the bill but almost looked fearful of the manager and that she isn't allowed to accommodate us. There was a weird vibe between her and the management. The waitress did her best to be kind, this review is 100% due to the manager being the way he was.
All in all, if the manager would have just been slightly considerate to us as nice customers that were spending 100+ dollars at his restaurant, and acknowledged us, we would have tipped extra + paid for app and not written this review. Just bad business overall.
This place makes you feel packed in like cattle, rushed, overpriced gross sushi, and bad management. Plenty of great restaurants in Cayman,...
