Da-dang! Da Dong bakes a great duck! Although the former romanized name of the Chinese capital may have name may have fallen out of favor, the delicacy that is synonymous with Beijing still goes by the former moniker. So when in Beijing you have to have Peking duck! Probably one of the most world-renowned dishes, Dadong prepares it with world renowned tastes! This location had a very relaxed feel to it as we dined next to the indoor koi pond, but the duck was serious business. The staff was very helpful and additionally educated patrons on the 4 different ways to consume the duck. Whether it be dipped in sugar, rolled in a tortilla with scallions and duck sauce or wrapped in a roll with soy it was very tasty. The duck was expertly prepared and the taste delighted all at our table. The meal came with free soup and dessert (caramelized crab apples) so keep that in mind when ordering. Although this was a five star place, the costs well relatively moderate. Four a family of four, including alcoholic beverages, our billed was less than 100 USD. The staff was very helpful even though there was a language barrier at times. Overall, I highly encourage you to “duck” into Dadong and enjoy a bite or two!

You can easily discern my dining choice in Beijing as the chef meticulously prepares the renowned Peking duck, touted as the city's finest and even frequented by Bill Clinton. Awarded a Michelin star, the restaurant serves exceptional Peking duck, requiring the chef to precisely slice it no more than 180 times to achieve the perfect balance of skin and meat. The delicately crisp skin, recommended to be dipped in sugar, effortlessly melts in the mouth. Diners have the option to indulge in the traditional dough skin or lettuce wraps, both equally delightful. Noteworthy additions to the meal include the braised duck wing and tongue, with the deboned wing proving irresistibly delectable. Despite the option of mapo tofu with lobster, the traditional rendition with spicy meat sauce surpasses in flavor; however, it may be too mild for some palates. Don't overlook the chilled jellyfish and peanut appetizer, as well as the savory sautéed mini naibai vegetable. The chilled chicken serves as a refreshing starter, while the perfect conclusion to the meal lies in the array of eight local Beijing desserts. Overall, a truly gratifying dining experience.

After having read the other comments, I had some good expectations of the food at Da Dong. Sure, it tasted decent and the food certainly looked even better, unfortunately the service was lacking what you'd expect for this sort of calibre of restaurant. For starters, we wasted ages looking through their 200 page menu trying to work out what to order. Then we tried to order, flicking through the hundreds of pages of the menu, while the waitress yawned at us looking like this was the last place she wanted to be. Actually most of the waitresses looked a little tired and overall lacked any sort of enthusiasm. I guess their mood kind of rubbed off on my impression of the food. Next, I tried to order one of their long list of beers. Sorry they only had a couple of them... boring old Tsing Tao which doesn't even taste like a beer should. Why would you list a whole bunch of drinks on your menu if you don't plan to stock any of them? Sorry but that is not good enough for a restaurant like this, what a let down. Fortunately, the food itself is the redeeming feature of this restaurant - it actually tastes pretty good and looks brilliant. A chef came out to carve the duck at our table, which was an interesting little bit of show. The skin and texture of the duck was exceptional and I doubt you can find better. Too bad the taste itself isn't as good as some of the duck I've had back in Sydney. Oh well, still pretty good and worth a try! I would recommend eating here, but don't expect anything from the service at all. Also, expect to be surrounded by foreigners (I certainly was).

In our quest to try the famous Beijing duck restaurants, my wife and I decided to come to this restaurant to see what the fuss was all about as they are known to be very outlandish and modern with their take on Beijing duck. We ordered one of their smaller ducks (as you can only one whole duck, we typically order half a duck), Caesar salad, crab and glass noodles, and one glass of pomegranate juice. The salad was dressed in a honey mustard sauce rather than Caesar dressing otherwise nothing too special. The crab and glass noodles was good with a bit of spice. The duck was much smaller than I expected because the portions was about the same as a half duck at other restaurants. The test overall for the duck was okay, the skin was very crispy, but the meat lacked a bit in flavor. The servers were very professional and attentive. However, would I personally revisit this restaurant again in the future? No. Why, the value for the money is not worth it to me. I’m happy that I tried this restaurant but it’s a one and done for me. The restaurant was a little hard to find, you enter the large building, go to the left, and take the elevator up to the fifth floor. If the elevator you got in doesn't have a button for the fifth floor, you did not go far enough to the left. The food was absolutely delicious! An epicurean's delight. The hostess was incredibly patient with us helping us decide. We ordered the Peking duck, which was tasty, and crispy, and not at all greasy or fatty which is very common. We also had the tomatoes stuffed with mushrooms and two different types of noodles. Everything was a tasty treat and a feast for the eyes. It was a little pricey, and my pina colladas were 90% ice leaving only a few sips of the delicious coconut cocktail.

Modern Chinese cuisine, you can't imagine how much it has improved unless you compare the food to the finest japanese omakaze or Michelin star restaurants around Europe and the UK. I'd never agree to wasting food unless it's unbearably bad, but you can start to understand why the new Chinese generations leave food uneaten at fancy restaurants overseas, it's because they have better food at home. The price point is reasonable, and I'd recommend you try the soups on the menu, absolute flavour bombs with a modern chinese twist. The squid ink and tomato soup (no photo) was just wow.
