Shinshu: great value Omakase!
Shinshu is a small ground floor Japanese restaurant in the area around Kennedy Town MTR station in West Hong Kong. They do sushi, sashimi, and Wagyu beef
Pros: The service is amazing. Ms Bo and Ms June the manager do try very hard to be friendly and welcoming to their customers. I was very impressed by their warmth, friendliness and genuine care they take for customers. The lunch time Omakase set is an 8-9 course sushi & sashimi for 438 HKD. This is exceedingly good value for money compared to fancy japanese restaurants in Central or Causeway Bay. In some ways, they have a unique business model. Serve very highly quality Japanese food in an area with cheaper rent. Thus ensuring you are paying for the food. And not the rent. The fish was very good. I would highly recommended the lunchtime Omakase.
Cons: Dishes can come quite quickly compared to more upscale Japanese restaurants. But this to be expected. The restaurant is relatively small so not surprisingly must do as many covers as possible to maximize their revenue. I suspect the profit margins are quite small. Thus that's how they are aiming to serve the best quality fish possible at fair prices. But if you want high value for money Japanese food, this is understandable. If you want a more leisurely meal, you can go to places on Causeway Bay. But then expect to pay 1000 HKD and more for Omakase
In short, Shinshu offers high quality Japanese food at fair prices. The toro and hamachi were creamy and oh so tender. If you want very good value for money Omakase in Hong Kong, look no further. Come to Shinshu. I definitely will be. Suggest you...

Took extra effort to visit again but this time our experience is ridiculous. We ordered a set menu with an abalone appetizer. Then we were told abalone was sold out and they asked us whether they can swap for scallop. We agreed.
We’ve finished all cold plates and then asked for the scallop twice, which should come first to begin with. Staff said it’s coming, but soon she put a shrimp tempura thingy on our table with no explanation.
We asked again and she said their chef didn’t tell her that he had swapped the scallop with shrimp because scallop also ran out. Interesting logic - guess their guests need to go to the kitchen to make sure you are getting what you actually ordered, otherwise you just get fed whatever they put on the table.
Will not come again and do...
Read moreAvoid this place, not worth the money. The sea urchin was really low quality as you can see in the photo. Seaweed served with it is not crispy and sticks to your teeth, basically stale. What ever you do, do not order white rice from here, it’s soggy and definitely not Japanese rice. In fact it’s the worst rice I’ve ever had in any Japanese restaurant.
When we first seated only one other large table were seated in the restaurant. With all the tables available they still seated us right next to the large table. The waitress keep brushing my pony tail when I was sitting leaning back even though there was plenty of space between my chair and the other people behind me. She did this 3 times and did not apologise or even acknowledge it happened.
Majority of customers speaks mandarin.
Will never...
