A local recommended this restaurant for a Caribbean dish and I enjoyed checking it out. I was quickly greeted and provided a menu, and decided to try the rice with chicken dish. It came to the table within minutes and I enjoyed the piece of chicken and part of the rice that I ate. I didn’t have a large appetite and asked a different server if I could please take the rest do the meal (the complete salad with lettuce, tomatoes and carrot slices along with a complete second piece of chicken) to go. I told her that it was delicious and if possible, I’d like it boxed or bagged to go. She nodded and removed the food. A few minutes later, I asked for the bill and the take home food from my original server. She looked confused and I explained that I had asked to take the meal home. Several minutes later, she returned and told me that the meal had been thrown away “en la basura.” I was disappointed, but thought perhaps that the other server didn’t understand my request. My server apologized and said that she would bring me another piece of chicken and salad to take away, I was happy with that and thanked her several times. A small take-out box was delivered to my table with the bill. A modest fee of .40 was added to my bill for the take-out box - no problem. I just opened the box for dinner and almost threw up! There were a few chicken bones and a small pieces of chicken (not anything like a piece of chicken I had expected) next to a clump of shredded lettuce and a small scattering of rice and beans. GROSS! I don’t know where or who it came from - awful - and I threw it in the trash. I can’t imagine that they removed it from the trash - no one would do that - it wasn’t even the whole/complete piece of chicken that I had on the plate. I have no words to describe how gross it was seeing the bones and chicken scraps in the box. I would never return to Cocos again. I will try to post a photo of my “take home”...

We are world travelers, experienced in developing nations, very simple in taste and easy to please. That is why I am totally sad that I am writing this terrible review, a first for me. We chose cocos after looking at the many options and good reviews. Unfortunately we never made it past our beer order. The wait staff seemed more interested in joking around with other patrons (locals?). We were very hungry so ordered a plate of chips and guacamole while deciding on the main meal. Long story short, we waited and waited for either of the waiters to bring the appetizer or at least to ask if we wanted another beer (1st one long finished). The place was less than 1/3 occupied, early in the evening, not busy. 45 minutes later we were finally able to get the attention of the waiter who took our order and asked if the chips were ready. He said he would check. We also told him if the order had not been placed, to cancel it. Next thing we see is the other waiter at our table with the credit card machine. The order had not been placed. No discussion. Absolutely floored us. Walked out 60 minutes after arriving. I think there should be a "zero star" option for extreme cases like this. The recent ratings were quite different, except for one local guide who had a similar experience several weeks prior. Went down the street and had a wonderful Caribbean meal....with friendly people. Recommend spending your money anywhere besides cocos, apparently they...

I am very sorry to say that I am utterly dissapointed with this resturant. At first I got a very good vibe from the place. Me and my friend ordered beans with rice and vegetables. I must say it was the most disgusting food I ever tasted. The rice had a weird aftertaste and the vegetables were most likely frozen and boiled or canned and or boiled. It tasted mostly of water. The banana tasted like slimy water and I had to spit it out. I never had the guts before to tell resturants if their food is not good and send it back but this time we did. After a few minutes we got the same food but less vegtebles and no banana and rice and beans not mixed. I still couldn't eat it and did not have the guts to send it back twice. I dont know why the rice tasted so weird, maybe it has something to do with the water? Honestly it was not the end of the world. But last but not LEAST I felt very uncomfortable when they sent out the boss to give our bill. They charged for all of it, (+tip??) would not argue or say anything BUT when a resturant serve disgusting food its not good time for being rude. Would not go back. Maybe the food is better for meat eaters but this vegetarian...

The food was actually tasty, the drink not so much, and the waiter was very pleasant but didn't seem all that efficient. I asked for a Bochinche casado and a lemonade with mint and my girlfriend for a casado with fish. She didn't want the fish breaded so she asked how it was done. He told her it was marinated (escabeche) and she agreed. Well, she got it breaded. My casado came with pasta instead of rice as in the menu. When I asked him, he said there was an error in the menu. I asked him why didn't he tell me, he replied that traditionally the Bochinche comes with pasta. I'm not from here, I don't know how it traditionally is done. Anyway, he did bring some rice over but it was going to be too much and, besides, I didn't know he was going to do that so I had started on the pasta so I refused the rice. The lemonade was minty but not very lemony, more like diluted. All in all, ok but not great.

I'm rating 5, not because of the food, but the drinks. The food to me seemed rather average, your usual Caribbean CR fare, meaning tomatoes, avocado, rice and beans for those of us that don't eat meat. They had quesadillas, but we try and eat as vegan as possible while traveling. Their drinks on the other hand were for me the first great drinks we've had in Costa Rica. They made a great bloody Mary (without all the celery and salad in top, but who needs that anyways), and my partner really enjoyed here coco loco. A fresh coconut in the shell with coconut milk, coconut water, and rum. You basically get a small meal with your drink if you dig out all the fresh coconut. Really friendly atmosphere, would come back.

We stopped in for a quick bite after a long hike through the National Park. The service was polite and helpful, but there were some locals enjoying cocktails who were causing quite a sight. Yelling and dancing. They pretty much took over any chance of having a conversation during your meal. We were surprised that the staff didn’t ask them to be quiet and calm down. Once we ate, the food was good. The rice and beans has a little different flavor than what we’ve been eating, it was very good. We ordered the smashed plantains with guacamole. That was delicious!
