This is going to be a strange review for me, because even though I mark this place on maps over 6 months ago, that I wanted to go, at the end something was missing, and even though at the beginning they were asking me about my preference and all, it wa strange that at the end nobody asked if I looked the experience, and I really had some useful insights, so here they go:.
When I reach the place well my first challenge was going up the stairs and get a seating.
After that I really thought it was going to be a really pleasant meal, because the lady asked me my preferences, I was letting her know that I don't eat food with spice, they even brought a little of the size they made so I could try it and double-check if it was too spicy for, etc. they're made me feel welcome( by the way the best Frozen that I have tasted in a while, because now most restaurants use some type of fruit concentrate, even though we are in a tropical country and tropical fruits are abundant). I was sure that I was going to have great meal, so I broke my rule of getting an appetizer when it's my first time in a restaurant (In a way I'm thankful for that, because basically that was all most what I ate for lunch).
For appetizer I got the shrimp tacos, but I asked to eliminate the spicy sauce, so they change it for a sweet sour marinade and I added some of the tamarindo sauce that they brought to check if it was too 🔥 🥵 🔥. The taco turned to be really nice at the end, ( I ate just one because I was waiting for the main course and I didn't want to get full, the order has 2) the tempura was on the spot, the cabbage salad side was ok. The main course was soup or ramen like dish. So it was a coconut milk base shock, with rice noodles, shrimps, 🥬 🍅 🥑 , scallions and some lemon wedges. I don't know you all but tasting soups the was is fine in Asia, it has been a game-changer for me, although in certain situations (like this one) it gets to a disappointing end.
So 1st the stock: was perfect It had a coconut milk based with curry paprika and other spices that it made it taste great. I really appreciate it, due to the fact that since my grandma died, I haven't taste soup like this.
Now the disappointed part: noodles and sides. Supposedly if you make a great or superb stock, you should match it up with amazing noodles and the rest of things that you put in so that it enhance the flavor, not diminish it.
First I know that restaurants are trying to cut corners because the country is now getting too expensive, but for this specific stock, rice noodles were not the right option and actually it decrease the flavor in a certain way. Tthey were too dull and I'm sure that in the preparation process, Even though these are sides and noodles, those supposed to be flavor a little, so when you get a full spoon of everything, it's not too salty, for example. So the fresh tomato, I would change it to something similar to chimichurri, or some other way, considering that the acid of the tomatoes kind of disrupts the coconut milk, therefore needs to be "neutralized" 😂 so it doesn't lower the quality of the stock. The avocado was a nice touch I didn't mind the scallions. Shrimps where only saute, but no salt and pepper added, again this is so that the shrimp has its own taste in a way and it doesn't lower the amazing flavor of the stock. So in general even though the place is cool, it's in a cool area, the initial customer service is great, not asking what went wrong when I left the mailing main course almost intact just broke my heart. I guess that they have d had experiences that people ask for a discount because they didn't like a or b, that it's not my case, when I try a new place I know it's a 50/50 chance, so I cannot ask for a discount if I hate it but nothing went wrong. The only way I ask for discounts, is if something went REALLY wrong, like finding things in my food, that shouldn't be there... I think that I everybody gets what I try to say. So just in that specific situation I got my 💔, when I spent almost 50$ and ni questions...
Read moreVisited two weeks ago. Got the worst case of food poisoning, likely from the fish tacos and we didn't have much food afterwards in the day.
No other customers in the late afternoon, and ordered the fish tacos, raw tuna tacos, ceviche, and Shanghai noodles. None of the food tasted very good. Noodles were very sweet, taco shells very crispy, fish tasted like nothing. Maybe it gets busy at night with mostly customers looking for booze and bar food?
Food poisoning made me want to die. Hours of explicit activity in the restroom throughout the night. Light fever and nausea, and all the works for days afterwards. I hope it was an accident or mistake by the restaurant, but it was my biggest regret choosing to go here out of...
Read moreWe stopped in for a beer and were told the menu was a QR at our table. A couple people in our party put their order in for a couple cocktails but when the rest of us tried to order a beer, the server said they don't have that one anymore and then dropped a totally different paper menu and vanished for at least 20 minutes until we could flag someone down. It wasn't busy at all and the server made a couple rounds to other tables and passed us by.
I wanted to like the place but definitely didn't feel welcome. The specialty bottle selection looked promising if not so expensive. I'm surprised they had Jester King on the menu, but for the price of 5 bottles, I could've bought a round trip flight to Austin and had one at...
