Taverna Athena — Restaurant in okres Brno-město

Not very busy during lunch time, this place is a merge of restaurant where you can sit and eat your meal, and fast-food place in which you can order at a bar, get your kebab, and walk away. Interior is really nice and decorated in typical Greek style. The daily menu seems to be a paper with some meals that are the same for every day, being sold until they are sold out. Besides that, the place has also its regular menu with both food and drinks. I wanted to have grilled challoumi cheese with salad, but it wasn't possible to modify a meal from daily menu, neither from their regular menu. I ended up with buying challoumi as a starter, and eating it up with leek soup. That soup was excellent! And challoumi wasn't also bad. The staff, which was one lady behind the bar, is not very quick and likes to talk to people so I had a feeling that I'm bothering her with my questions about daily menu, ordering, etcc, as there was always someone else to talk to. Very mediocre in all regards. I've visited twice, I don't think I have a reason to visit again, unless I was really craving greek food. Gyros is OK, but then again, it's gyros, it's hard to screw up. More complex meals, such as souvlaki are a disappointment. Meat is fine but the tzatziki are tasteless, pita tastes very rubbery - it's the supermarket "long shelf life" pita. In my opinion, that is really a shame, and the pita itself knocked a star from this review. I would expect more vegetables served with both meals. As for service, it is, once again, mediocre. A quirky mixture of a snobbish restaurant and a low class fast food. You can get gyros to go, for which it is a bit expensive or you can order pricey traditional Greek food for which the ambiente is way too fast-foodish and dirty.
