While visiting Aix-en-Provence, my wife and I had dinner at Le Bistrot and it was a great experience. The first thing one notices when entering the restaurant is a glass plate in the floor overlooking a lower floor of the restaurant – very unusual. We did not have reservations but were able to secure a nice table in one of the quiet corners of the restaurant. The other thing you immediately notice is the menu, all the dishes are a play on words. “Merde de Big-Mac” is the name of their beef burger offering. I ordered “Parce que je le veau bien” which is the their veal stew with tagliatelle pasta. My wife ordered the “canard boiteaux” which was duck thigh and potato salardaise. All of the dishes were very tasty. For dessert, we had ice cream and a serving of their bread pudding with chocolate sauce. The table service was excellent as was the wine selection. We found that we could order a partial bottle of wine at Le Bistrot, which was particularly helpful. Le Bistrot is a fun restaurant with an excellent menu, great service and an interesting interior floor. It should be tried at least once if you’re in the area of Aix-de-Provence.

This restaurant was perfect. We ate here the first night in town and it was lovely. The street is quiet and peaceful. There was no electronic music (which many other restaurants seem to love). The staff was honestly some of the most sweet and kind staff I’ve encountered in France. As for food it was simple, tasty and reasonably priced. We had a the salmon rillete as an appetizer (as a result of inaccurate menu pointing on my part) and it was really great. The combo of the smoked salmon, the soft bread and delicious olive oil was divine. Also had the duck config which fell off the bone and was perfectly moist. My dining companion enjoyed the risotto and ratatouille which provided a well balance flavor combo. We finished with the crème brûlée which was unique because the cream was less sweet than other places which balanced the cooked sugar topping well. We don’t have reservations and sat outside. It was very nice. Outside seating seems to fit 2 people max. Make reservations for more.

The ambience and the street it is located on are quite pleasant... But we are really disappointed. The cooking level of the meat was not a minor mistake, but we received a rather "annoying" reply, saying "medium well is just like that in France". (chefs are crying) It is not healthy for the plates on which meat is served to be made of wood (they claim that it is specially produced, but if so, it is worn by knife blows and is prone to bacteria). When we asked if we could try to eat the overcooked meat with sauce, we received the answer no in a seems like friendly but rather tense tone. It was claimed that we caused incredible damage!! to the restaurant because they were going to serve the second meat. We did not ask and have. Burger was meh. French fries did not seem like how they should be….It was the only establishment in the Aux en Provence region that we were not satisfied with. There is no shortage of customers, they were full it will not prosper unless the staff and mind change.
