If I could I would leave a negative review. One of the 3 waiters was the cook. The food was overpriced for it's taste. I ordered the meat of the day and it was a steak with NO SEASONING on it. The food took an hour to come out. The fish of the day appetizer had a tiny piece of fish and was just some sort of rice (picture below). The steak was undercooked and if you ask them about anything they just say it's suppose to be like that. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT GOOD FOOD

The Nightmare at Gaudina: Aggressive Waiter, Octopus Too Tough, and Lukewarm Risotto.

My recent visit to Gaudina in Arles left me greatly disappointed, prompting me to write this one-star review. The numerous issues I encountered throughout my meal were unacceptable, to say the least.

Let me start by addressing the appalling behaviour of the bald waiter, whose obnoxious attitude and unwarranted threats tarnished and already poor dining experience. When my wife and I decided to send back our main dishes, the Octopus and Risotto, due to the octopus being terribly tough and too chewy, and the risotto being lukewarm at best, we expected a reasonable response. However, the waiter responded aggressively and even threatened to involve the police, despite our justifiable reasons for the items to be removed from the bill.

When we inquired why the items had not been removed, the waiter dismissively claimed that the risotto had been tested and deemed hot, implying that our complaint was unfounded. It is important to note that this information was never communicated to us after we had returned the dishes. This lack of transparency and accountability was highly unprofessional.

Furthermore, the waiter's behaviour escalated to argumentative and confrontational, which was witnessed by other guests at the restaurant. Such behaviour is unacceptable in any establishment, especially one that claims to provide a pleasant dining experience.

The service was not the only area that fell short of expectations. The main dishes took an excessively long time to be served, nearly an hour, which is far from acceptable. Additionally, the tabbouleh starter was bland and unappetising, lacking any semblance of flavour. We had to request salt to salvage its taste, but even then, it remained far from satisfactory.

During our attempts to resolve the issue with the bill, the waiter's colleague reluctantly removed the Octopus charge but they insisted on still charging us for the risotto. Frustrated with this unreasonable stance, we decided to document the problem and seek reimbursement through our credit card company. However, when I tried to take a picture of the original and revised receipts for clarity, the bald waiter aggressively snatched the old receipt, crumpled it, and threw it behind the bar - see attached picture. This action was utterly unnecessary and demonstrated his arrogance, obnoxiousness, control, and aggression. It also seemed apparent that his behaviour was not an isolated incident, as his colleagues clearly had the look of "not this again" on their face.

In conclusion, my experience at Gaudina was marred by the unprofessional and hostile behaviour of the bald waiter, coupled with a lacklustre presentation, subpar food, and unreasonably long waiting times. I strongly advise against dining at this establishment, as the negative aspects overshadow any...

Le soir, nous nous sommes promenés dans le centre d'Arles à la recherche d'un bon endroit pour manger.

Nous sommes passés par hasard devant le restaurant Gaudina. Le menu était affiché de manière accueillante sur un présentoir dans la ruelle juste devant l'entrée. Alors que nous étudiions le menu, le chef est sorti, nous a parlé ( !) et s'est renseigné sur nos souhaits avec gentillesse et professionnalisme.

Wow, pas mal, ai-je pensé. Vieille école, bonne école.

Mes deux collègues ont réfléchi un moment, mais nous avons finalement décidé de dîner au Gaudina. C'est un joli petit restaurant avec un personnel très sympathique. Nous avons été parfaitement conseillés et servis.

Et ce qui nous a été servi était très, très bon.

Une cuisine locale super géniale, avec des produits locaux bien sûr. Et comme tout doit être frais, il peut arriver qu'un plat soit déjà épuisé le soir même. Ce qui est tout à fait normal. C'est ce qui nous est arrivé. Par exemple, il ne restait plus qu'une portion de moules pour le plat principal du soir.... ;-) Le collègue les a commandées.

J'ai pris en entrée la 'terrine de taureau maison'. Une terrine fantastique. Si fraîche et si goûteuse que mon collègue a commandé cette entrée avec les moules.

Mon plat principal était une 'pièce du boucher'. Il s'agissait d'un ragoût qui, ce jour-là, était si tendre qu'il se désagrégeait dès qu'on le touchait avec une fourchette.

C'était vraiment un excellent repas. Merci beaucoup ! Abends spazierten wir durch das Zentrum von Arles auf der Suche nach einem guten Lokal zum Essen. Wir kamen zufällig am Restaurant Gaudina vorbei. Die Speisekarte lag einladend auf einem Ständer in der Gasse direkt vor dem Eingang aus.

Während wir die Speisekarte studierten, kam der Chef heraus, sprach uns an (!) und erkundigte sich freundlich und professionell nach unseren Wünschen. Wow, nicht schlecht, dachte ich. Alte Schule, gute Schule.

Meine beiden Kollegen überlegten noch etwas aber dann entschieden wir uns im Gaudina zu speisen. Es ist ein hübsches, kleines Lokal, mit sehr freundlichem Personal. Wir wurden perfekt beraten & bedient.

Und es war sehr, sehr fein was uns da serviert wurde.

Super geniale, lokale Küche, selbstverständlich mit lokalen Produkten. Und da alles frisch sein muss, kann es auch vorkommen, dass ein Gericht am Abend bereits ausverkauft ist. Was absolut in Ordnung ist. So geschehen bei uns. Es gab zum Beispiel Abends als Hauptgang nur noch eine Portion Miesmuscheln.... ;-) Die hat die Kollegin bestellt.

Ich hatte die "Terrine de taureau maison" als Vorspeise. Das ist eine (sorry) Hammer-geile Terrine. So frisch und geschmackvoll, dass meine Kollegin mit den Muscheln diese Vorspeise auch nach bestellte. Mein Hauptgang war ein "Pièce du boucher". Das war an dem Tag ein Ragout, das so etwas von zart war und zerfiel, wenn man es mit der Gabel anhob.

This was on the recommendations list from our local tour guide, and it turned out great! Had a lentil tabbouleh salad as a starter, though not sure "tabbouleh" is the right word for it, as it's quite original, with coriander and pomegranate, and so much more. Loved it, and must remember the ingredients for a tasty packed lunch at work. Then, the lamb medallion was otherworldly! It seemed to have an oriental inspired spice mix, something I recognised but couldn't put a name on, so spent every delightful bite trying to figure it out. My best guess was something similar to ras el hanout, waitress said lemons, ginger and coriander, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't all. So, not one for when you're looking for "traditional" French fare, but definitely give it a go if you're happy to experiment with ...
