Go anywhere but to this restaurant, worst service period!
All my years of working in five-star hotels have taught me that a bad review deserves a good explanation. So here we go! We made an advance reservation to sit on the terrace (facing canal) a day before my anniversary dinner. At the day of our reservation, we arrived 10 mins early, still, we were made to wait for over 25 mins in Boucherie outside of the restaurant (no chairs offered).
After all the wait, a table was offered to us, in the extreme corner of the restaurant with hardly any view. First, we were a little sad but we made our peace seeing that no other seats were available. But with a bit of our luck, a table right behind us left, and looking at this opportunity, we asked our waiter to change our seats. Seems like a reasonable request! Isn't it? Well to our surprise server almost screaming told us that ”you can't have the seat as people have made reservations via phone”!! I didn’t wanted to be confrontational so i didn’t reply but in my head I was thinking, so what did we do? Did we sent pigeons instead? Well, no in fact we went there to reserve. Anyway, thing to remember here is that we just sat down on our sad corner table, and by this time they didn't even offered us the menus ! It was just a simple table switch but they didn’t allow us.
Well from here on it was downhill, no suggestion were given for food, no feedback taken during or after a meal, judgmental comments were passed for the choice of wine, no menu desserts offered either! Well, no doubt the food was fine but to be honest, we didn't go there for their excellent food, we were there for the view and service.
When told about the whole episode, the manager did take off wines from our bill but at the end of the day, our experiences were ruined, including my...
Read moreThis is a must in Colmar!!! We stumbled upon it late after arriving in Colmar. Upon arrival we were greeted with a smile from none other than George(we are terrible and know zero french so it took us till the next day to realize that the restaurant name was the counter of George and that it indeed was George that greeted us). He offered us a sample of beef carpaccio as we waited to be seated (make reservations if possible) and welcomed us to Colmar. We ordered the beef Carpaccio and the pork medallions with a pinot noir sauce and sat right next to the bar/dessert counter 😋. It was incredible! So incredible that as we were leaving and thanking George for his recommendation, he asked how long we were staying and offered to get us reservations for lunch the next day so we could come back to try his beef tartar(for those of you who don't know this is raw chopped beef served with a raw egg, onion, pickle, and cappers and next to impossible to get in the states). The next day we where greeted once again by George and taken to our seats, this time we were sat on the terrace next to the window looking onto petite venice. Again, we followed George's recommendations and got the Beef Tartar and the aged Beef filet served with a morrel cream sauce and fries. Literal heaven in your mouth! George's hospitality and impeccably clean/beautiful butcher counter enticed us, everything else made it a true experience! The sevice staff may not be as warm(its france) as George, but go knowing the food will be superb! I'm not much of a reviewer, but my wife and I are restaurateurs and foodies from the middle of cattle country and I still wish I could go back to Colmar France...
Read moreOn a rainy Sunday afternoon this place seemed like a good spot for an afternoon lunch. Seated upstairs with a view of the square ( too cool and wet to use the waterside patio) felt right. Things went downhill from there. Going over the menu there were 5 entrees that looked interesting and between 4 of us we could then share 2 mains. Not so fast, the young waiter explained, there would be a €7 surcharge per person on the entrees. “ this is a restaurant not a bistro” he explained wearing his black tee shirt with the restaurant name printed across the back. In fairness there was a red notice on the menu about the surcharge atop the entree section, translated to English it made no sense. So scratch the entrees, mains all around. Chicken and veal in puff pastry was fine, braised beef was tender enough although the various shredded vegetables were very bistro-like. Beef carpaccio was 10 see-through slightly salty slices. Then came the veal cordon blu, more like cordon noir. A rolled up charred lump. It was not revenge of the kitchen 2 identical lumps arrived at an adjoining table . Over done as it was the crust was acrid ( not the tasty golden brown normally found ) and left a bitter after taste. The spetzel that came with it was room temperature, dry and chewy…maybe that’s the way it’s supposed to be served. At least the bread was fresh and tasty, but requested butter came with a supplementary charge. You will only leave this place feeling disappointed. Try somewhere else, there are plenty to choose...
