La Nord — Restaurant in District of Dax

Mediocre service( being generous). japanese-french fusion kitchen. Had better food at nearby beach bars.

Edit- since whoever is responding to these reviews is as rude as his waiters. I'll explain my bad review in details. We arrived to a reletivly slow evening. We were sitted quick outside. Place has the best review around and we were happy to try it out. From sitting we were approached after around 15 min or so when I cought the attention of the waiter. Being nice, i asked if he had time for our order. To which he replied (quote)- "No, but I'll take your order anyway" Easy, I'm not pitty, I've been in this business for awhile. We order, first thing we want is not available.we had a 2 questions regarding the dishes. I asked what is "Cochon"?(sorry i don't have the entire gastronomic lexicon in french dailed in) The waiter giggles at me and replay- that's pork, like bacon. Again I found that offensive and unnecessary, but, whatever. I've met some unpleasant ppl in my life and this one wont ruin my evening. We order 2 sharing dishes a bottle of wine and a bottle of water. The waiter comes back tether quickly with a bottle of wine and says " i have good news and bad news. The wine you want is not available, but the good news, i have this one here which is so and so..." Ok, i considered this bottle anyways. But, how about offering me another look at the list? It's not like we established any friendly vibes.

They recommend 3-4 potions for a full dinner for a couple. The moment we ordered less. I got a sour face from the waiter. It's worth to mention we originally searched google maps for a wine bar as we wanted a drink and some food and not the other way around. They were on the list but apparently, that not they want in their restaurant. Which is understandable when it's packed. But hey, were talking Monday evening, OFF season.

Food arrives- sushi was very good, interesting. Unfemiliar scents. Really, great dish. Second a yakitory skewer from local chicken with crunchy rice. Sauce was a touch too strong, chicken a touch too cooked but still, nice eating experience.

Dessert - de-constracted tartlet with chocolate, smoked berries and anther thing i don't remember. We found it not pleasing for the eye and not very tasty was not to our liking but I won't go there cause it might just be our personal taste.

At this point we already had a different team member serving us with little to no contact until we finished our wine.

Upon the bill my girlfriend didn't want me to tip but I saw on the bill it not included. I decided we will leave but it obviously had to also reflect our experience at the restaurant. So no. I was not amazing (the whole tip not included is weird to begin with since it works very different in most places I've visited in France, some percentage of the bill i dedicated to service. Which we always tip on top since most places we visit our super friendly) again I got a sour face. Understandable, but.. well..

So, whoever replied to my original review. If you think that your sassy replays are the way to go, instead of maybe a little bit of self reflection and you think your such a great restauranteur, im sure with the volume of tourists arriving to your amazing town, your great location and such good reviews, I'm sure you'll continue doing well.

And for my syntax, English is not my first language. That replay is no better then a 6 YO...

TRÈS MAUVAISE ADRESSE Ce n'était pas bon. Du début à la fin. Nous y sommes allés car le restaurant avait une bonne réputation et la plupart des avis étaient très positifs. Quelle déception ! Le concept est de commander des assiettes à partager, ce qui peut paraître sympa a priori, mais les assiettes sont très petites, nous étions 3, globalement nous avions 2 bouchées chacun. De plus le restaurant donne une indication pour commander 3 ou 4 assiettes pour 2, nous étions 3 nous en avons donc commandés 5, soit 80 % de la carte. L'engagement est que tout est local et fait maison. Encore faut-il savoir ce que l'on mange. Les 5 assiettes étaient soit sans saveur ni odeur, soit carrément pas bonnes, soit on ne savait pas vraiment ce qu'on mangeait. Sur les 5 assiettes, seul le plat de dorade a été correct : poisson très bien cuit et bien assaisonné (mais portion tellement petite que pour 3, ce n'était guère envisageable), toutefois, l'accompagnement de la dorade n'était pas bon. Une des assiettes (un risotto aux pleurotes : comprendre : l'équivalent d'une cuillérée à soupe de riz, 3 pleurotes et une mousse ultra légère qui remplissait l'assiette mais n'avait aucun goût) a été servie à moitié froide. Nous avons quand même essayé de nous rattraper en prenant des desserts : mal nous en a pris, ils n'étaient franchement pas bons, voire mauvais (le mien avait un arrière goût extrêmement désagréable). Le service est agréable et a été assez rapide, les serveurs semblent très sûrs que ce qu'ils servent est excellent, nous n'avons pas osé détruire leur rêve. Ajoutez à cela une addition relativement élevée, pour un repas où nous n'avons pris aucun plaisir et dont nous sommes sortis en ayant encore faim.

Le mystère reste entier quant aux avis si positifs qui ne reflètent absolument pas la réalité. En comparaison, nous avons mangé cette semaine là (nous étions en vacances) dans 5 restaurants de même niveau (en terme d'offre et de prix) et nous avons très bien mangé dans les 4 autres.

Le concept de base peut être sympa (assiettes à partager) mais il ne faut pas oublier que la fonction première d'un restaurant et de satisfaire les clients avec des bons repas ! Le cuisinier devrait se remettre en question très rapidement : l'originalité et les essais divers et variés sont les bienvenus à condition qu'ils soient vraiment testés et qu'on comprenne ce que l'on mange et que l'on distingue de vraies saveurs. Servir un rizotto sans saveur et même pas salé, une soupe de poisson qui se présente sous forme d'un bouillon très clair et dans laquelle on ne détecte aucun fumet de poisson, des topinambours qui se transforment en 3 chips de topinambour sur une purée très liquide sans aucun goût, je n'appelle pas cela être inventif.

Enfin côté convivialité, le restaurant est extrêmement bruyant (les tables sont très rapprochées) et il était difficile de se parler sans hausser le ton.

Les 2 étoiles sont pour le service qui était correct. Sinon c'aurait été...

I can confidently say that our meal at La Nord was probably the best I’ve eaten in France. My fiancé and I visited this lovely restaurant to celebrate my birthday, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect choice. What initially drew us to the restaurant was its ethos—La Nord champions local and seasonal cuisine, and this philosophy shines through in every bite.

The service was great, with our waiter helping us to navigate their incredible wine selection and recommend dishes. The wines alone are worth a visit, offering a diverse and thoughtfully curated range.

As for the food, I could have happily eaten every dish on the menu. However, the standouts for me were the cervelle de canut, the aubergine dish, and their exceptional cheesecake au Bleu des Basque. Each was exquisitely prepared and beautifully presented.
