Engimono — Restaurant in Lyon

Interesting evening! I had an 8:30 reservation but service quite slow due to a busy fully booked restaurant with 2 lovely and friendly waitresses and a nice owner at first, who was the ONLY one seating and taking all orders for the entire restaurant (inside and outside). After waiting quite some time to place our order—I mistakenly took a recommendation for my son’s order from the owner after his initial choice of pork dish was already finished for the evening.

After the long wait to order food, it totally slipped my mind to even asked her what was in the recommended chicken dish—which had peanuts ( my son is allergic to). I will say they ask online to mentioned allergies etc. but felt she also should have asked us about allergies before giving her unwarranted recommendation.

Now, what was disappointing is though I took full accountability for not asking—the owner just smiled and accepted I pay entirely for this dish on top of still ordering another meal for my son. No real apology from her nor did she take any accountability ( not professional and no etiquette).

Now, on to the meals—his dumpling soup was average and did not match soup( perhaps wrong choice). My shrimp dish barely had any shrimps and I believe they rationed off maybe 4 small shrimps (I’m probably being generous on how many shrimps was actually in this dish). It was a few chopped pieces breaded and fried in sweet and sour sauce then mixed in a bowl of mostly spicy peppers, onions ( expensive for that it was). This dish was overpowered by peppers, onions, celery etc. It really was missing the main opening act—“The SHRIMP”! 🤣🤣🤣🙏.

Lastly, since I was keeping the chicken dish I so graciously accepted to pay for (but don’t think it really was my choice anyways). While trying to get the owner attention when she was back upstairs seating other guests— as I called her over to tell her about his allergies and the dish—she appeared with a disturbed look on her face that I even called her over to the table and wasn’t in the mood to hear what I called her over for (about his allergic reaction to food). Since, this bill was on me I ended up keeping and trying the chicken dish that was mediocre and FULL off beautiful veggies and peppers overpowering the chicken as well.

The best dish of the evening was as the Aubergines brun. One of the best I’ve had and highly recommend, if anything. This is my honest opinion based on “my” personal experience and does not mean it will...

I’ve been to this place three times before and never had any major issues — the food is average but decent enough if you're just looking to satisfy your hunger.

However, during my recent visit, I encountered a server whose behavior was extremely unprofessional and borderline aggressive. His tone was unnecessarily harsh, and the interaction left a very unpleasant impression. This kind of attitude from staff can completely ruin the dining experience.

To be fair, other waiters I’ve dealt with here were polite and attentive, so this seems to be an isolated case. Still, it was disappointing enough that I wouldn’t recommend this place anymore. It’s unfortunate when one person’s attitude overshadows the work of the rest of the team.

If you are looking for authentic Chinese food, here is not the right place to be!!!绝对不正宗! Roujiamo肉夹馍 is horrible with cinnamon bread and some tasteless dry pork. Gongpao chicken宫保鸡丁 is served with very little portion of chicken and is soaked in sweet and sour sauce... Fished flavour eggplant鱼香茄子 is again made with sweet and sour sauce. The food is overly sweet and I had been very thirsty for 3 hours after eating!!!!!!! I seriously doubt that the restaurant has put too much MSG in the food.
