If you're a steak lover, especially one who appreciates a truly exceptional piece of meat, then Gueuleton is an absolute must-visit in Lyon. This incredible restaurant specialises in serving up delicious, sharing-sized on-the-bone steaks that are an experience in themselves.
They boast a fantastic selection of steaks, showcasing both French regional specialties and international cuts. Being in Lyon, we opted for a local steak, and it was a phenomenal choice. Cooked and beautifully charred to perfection, you could really taste the depth of flavour that comes from being cooked on the bone. Watching it then being expertly cut up for the table was part of the experience!
And let's not forget the sides! Each steak comes with generous portions of roast potatoes and vegetables, which are simply divine. They soak up all the delicious juices and fat from the steak as they cook, making them just as memorable as the main event.
While they do offer smaller steaks and other dishes, the sharing on-the-bone steaks are the real draw. It's worth noting that due to the size and cooking method, these larger cuts tend to be well-done on the outside, transitioning to a perfect medium to medium-rare in the thicker parts – ideal for sharing preferences.
The staff at Gueuleton are incredibly kind and welcoming. They took the time to explain the different cuts and were happy to accommodate any requests we had. This restaurant is particularly perfect for a special treat or for dining with a larger group. We were a party of eight and sharing around 2kg (including the bone) from two different steak varieties was absolutely perfect.
Yes, the price point is on the higher end, but it is absolutely worth it for the exceptional quality of the produce and the skill in the cooking. Gueuleton is an unforgettable dining experience that I would highly recommend to any serious steak enthusiast...
Read moreSecond visit, second time I've been disappointed. The headline is that this place makes great theatre - steaks are paraded around on wooden boards with a flourish, but the food doesn't match up it. The service is rushed, the meat isn't properly seasoned before it's cooked, it's not cooked with a great deal of skill (it's only grilling meat folks, it's not that hard). I had the duck, on which the fat had not been properly rendered, though the skin had been charred to give it the right appearance. Properly rendering takes time and care, but this is not the place for that it seems. Everything is cooked blue, as a customer you are not asked how you would like your meat cooked which is slightly presumptuous. Raw duck with charred skin, not my cup of tea. A style over substance branding exercise. Won't be giving it a third chance.
Visited for the first time last week. Before I give my review, I would say that I will definitely try the place again as I like the vibe, but I think our first experience was a bit unlucky. We ordered the onglet, and whilst the flavour was good, it was very gristly and pretty tough to eat. We couldn't actually eat it, but took it away and made some good crispy beef from it the next day (once we'd cut out all of the gristle!) The potatoes it was served with were undercooked (some almost raw), and when we mentioned this to the waiter he just cleared the table and that was it - no apology / offer of replacement etc. which we thought was a bit poor. Given that all went for was steak and potatoes it's safe to say we were quite disappointed! Got the impression they just wanted to turn the table over. Hopefully it will be...
Read moreThe place was nice and our waiter was kind and helpful. However, the steak wasn’t cooked to medium rare like requested, as it was more on the rare side and also came out cold as if it had been off the grill for a bit and was waiting to be brought to the table. We mentioned the steak was cold, and they kindly agree to cook it for a bit longer and to heat it up. But, it came out cold yet again. For a 870g steak at 140 euro for the steak, it should have been cooked to perfection the first time, and definitely the second time. They should have double checked it was warm before brining it out the second time. We didn’t feel like asking again and we were hungry so we ended up eating relatively cold steak, which was not enjoyable. We also had the bone marrow which was tasty but also could have been cooked more. The foie gras was also disappointing as it arrived with just two slabs of foie gras without any confit or anything to supplement its flavor and reduce its richness. Most restaurants do not serve foie gras by itself. I get the sense the kitchen was trying to rush orders to increase turnover and instead of ensuring everything that goes to table is up to par with the price...
