My dad and I had a really good meal at la maison de Marie. I was feeling really tired and cranky before coming to the restaurant. In fact, I wanted to just stay the night in instead of eating out. However, I'm so grateful for whatever impetus got me to go to this restaurant and try their food. My dad had been wanting traditional Niçoise food, so we scouted this restaurant. To say the least, we were given one of the best meals so far on our trip to Europe. Every single dish was delicious and filling! We shared our dishes so we got to try 4 in total (2 entrées and 2 main dishes). If you're feeling experimental, I highly recommend ordering la fleur de courgette. It's goat cheese and courgette cream stuffed flowers with almonds. To be honest, I was a little tentative tasting the flower, but it was so delicious enhanced by the creaminess of the filling and the added flavor and texture of the almonds. My dad got the les petits farcis niçois, which were stuffed vegetables. The filling was wonderfully paired with each vegetable on the plate. I'm no food connoisseur, so it's hard for me to describe how wonderfully the flavors and textures of these dishes worked together. For our main dishes, my dad got le bœuf, which he said was one of the best steaks he's ever had. I'd say it was definitely the best steak I have ever had (although I don't eat much steak). He got the steak with the herb butter, which paired really nicely with the tenderness of the meat. I myself got la daube niçoise, which was a flavor explosion. The dish was a tender beef stew with soft pillowy ravioli. After having travelled--pretty chaotically might I add--so far, this dish was such a comfort and really warmed my soul. Finally, we shared a tiramisu for dessert (named le ti-Marie-su on their menu for a cute play on words). This was the best tiramisu I've ever had (I know I've been saying this a lot but it's true). The cacao nibs on top of the tiramisu helped add texture and cut the sweetness of the cream. The espresso used for this dessert was rich but not too bitter and strong. It really complimented the sweetness of the cream. We ended up ordering way too much, and I felt stuffed by the end of the night, however, it was totally worth it!

We had our first dinner in Nice at La Maison de Marie. We were so excited to try a new region of France. Oh my goodness… what a DISAPPOINTMENT! At first glance it looked like a cool restaurant with ambience. It has a neat passage way off the main road. Once you get in and seated you can see it’s all pretend and plastic. Kind of dusty too. Next, the staff were all pretentious and had that nervous running around energy some places do to seem more important than they are. They even dropped the heavy book menu on my face and didn’t even apologize - so rude. I am incredulous. How many starred restaurants do you go to where the staff act like that? None. We think it’s to overcome the mediocrity of their food. The fish soup heard the word Umami and swam away as fast as it could. I had a roasted pork knuckle that was just flat. Seriously, the chef should go to Germany or the Alsace region to learn how to cook them. My husband had “grilled” octopus that was pan fried and not grilled and served over an ocean of risotto making the plate unbalanced - and the risotto was super sweet. Again - no umami. They served mediocrity with a side order of pretentiousness and people shouldn’t spend money on that. I wonder if we can get a credit back on the calories we ate. Guess we won’t get those back. I would give them zero star if I could. We skipped dessert and went cruising for somewhere fun for that…

La Maison de Marie on Rue Massena in Nice is right in the centre of the city. The restaurant is located in a beautiful backyard, off one of the main pedestrian streets. So despite being very central, La Maison de Marie feels quiet and relaxed.

We started our meal with a shared plate of, I think, cured ham, honey and melon. I do not exactly remember all ingredients, but what I remember is that both of us greatly enjoyed the interesting combination of flavours in this starter.

I ordered a beef fillet with french fries as main. I was a little bit disappointed by the fries - they were good, but not exceptional. However, the steak was excellent and the sauce was delicious. My friend had seafood pasta, he said that it was a bit of a mixed bag - overall good, but with room for improvement.

My starter and my main went perfectly together with the dry white wine from Corse. It was so good, that I ordered a second glass half way through my meal.

To round off the evening, I ordered a strawberry dessert and was surprised when it was a simple black slate plate with a pile of strawberries. That is the kind of dessert I like!

La Maison de Marie is a decent restaurant that offers delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere, just a stone's throw away from the masses of tourists that walk down Rue Massena. It is not as fancy as some other restaurants in Nice, but it offers quality dishes in the beautiful surroundings of a back garden - at least when it...

The restaurant is located in the city centre but can be missed easily. There is just a small gate entrance that gets you directly in the lovely outdoor seating area. From the inside, the place is much larger than you would expect. The personal seems to have hard time catching up with the guests, so longer waiting times occur. Our waiter spoke some basic English but not enough for a real conversation or questions. Overall, he did not really seem to care about us, since he did not inquire about empty wine glasses or a serving us a coffee with dessert. We had the three course menu which was ok. Nothing more, noting less. The served sizes were ok but on the lower end of the scale. My stuffed rabbit came with three small potatoes. Half the plate was filled with some salad and lettuce leafs. Salt was missing completely. A fish soup started the whole thing. Interestingly, it did not contain any pieces of fish at all. This would have been no problem if the taste would have reminded me of fish - but it was more like goulash. Three types of pineapple were served for dessert. The sorbet and stewed pineapple were nice but nothing interesting at all. The third variant was a "pineapple carpaccio", i.e. three somewhat thin slices of pineapple. Basically, this just sums up the menu - not bad at all but not what you expect in a good restaurant. From my experience no recommendation. There are far better...
