To preface this, I donât like explaining exceptions restaurants make, as someone may read this and expect the restaurant to do the same for them. This being said, I have to explain the kindness bestowed upon us. My wife and I had been exploring museums and the city all day and had an early breakfast and skipped lunch. We had not made any reservations and by 7pm we started hunting for a restaurant that had openings. After being denied by the 5th restaurant and losing hope, we came across Cellar.
Almira saw us right away and told us the restaurant was booked for the evening by a private party. Disappointment set in quickly and we told them of our troubles finding a restaurant. We asked for recommendations for other restaurants nearby. Almira asked where we were from and we told her Chicago. She then lit up and told us the gentleman that booked the restaurant was from Chicago. He came out and we were introduced to him. We talked with him about where we lived and related to each other quickly. He was so personable and kind to us. We felt guilty crashing the party but she said it was meant to be so we embraced it. We then had the most amazing meal and conversation and felt so blessed for happy accidents.
Almira was a perfect host, so much it felt as if we knew her as a good friend and she was welcoming us into her home. She made recommendations, we went with them and were not disappointed in any of our meal. My wife and I enjoy trying all types of cuisines and this was a great evening of tastes and textures. Chef GeoffreyâŠeach dish was fantastic. The dishes had well balanced flavors and were all very fresh tasting. No dish was heavy and they were perfectly sized portions as well. My wife and I shared a Sea Bream Sashimi, a Braised Eggplant, (Katsudon) Breaded Pork Filet, Sea Bream Entree. Even the pork filet was done with care and was not a heavy dish. The Sea Bream Sashimi appetizer was my favorite. Hints of acid. Delicate pieces of fish. The eggplant was probably the best we had ever had.
We truly feel this is a diamond in the rough. The cooking and the service are spot on. Highly recommend you make reservations and enjoy this experience for yourself.
Almira and Geoffrey (and Joe!)-Thank you all for creating a wonderful and happy memory. We appreciate your hospitality...
Read moreAmazing! My friend and I had our last meal in Paris here, on Valentine's day 2020. The food was beyond amazing. Although it was a cozy little place and they didn't speak much English, and sadly my french was almost enough (but I have a lot of food allergies, which is where I fell short), believe me, this place was to die for (pun intended).
I had the filet mignon, and my friend had the foie gras, and we both left with one of the best meals we've ever had. The salad on the side and garnish for both the filet and the salad were absolutely perfect, not to mention the suggested wine pairing which was a delicious Bordeaux for me.
It also wasn't overly pricey, a little more than the other dinners we had in Paris but about average, it was a little under âŹ64 for us both. All I have to say is the next time I'm in Paris, I know where I'll be...
