I came to Paris with a list of bakeries to try - I figured I would try to do my part to help mankind discover the best in Paris…..a true sacrifice for sure!
I had seen Boulangerie Utopie on several of the lists of top bakeries in Paris. After trying 12 highly rated bakeries in Paris and gaining more than 10 pounds in my pursuit to find the best bakery, I’ll declare this my favorite.
Paris has so many great bakeries and cafes. You can find a great tart on almost every street corner. I’ll lay out why this is my favorite of the “bakers dozen” :)
I’ll start with the variety of items and the quality of the food. I had a piece of quiche and a chocolate tart. The quiche was incredibly light and fluffy, but completely full of flavor. The crust was flaky and tasty. I have never had a quiche like this one. It was filing but I also did not feel stuffed. The chocolate tart was melt in your mouth delicious. It had the perfect balance of firmness, creaminess while being incredibly moist. It was also delicately rich.
The offering was complete. While most bakeries have 2-3 really delightful items, the case was chock full of options that were so incredibly tempting. The sandwiches and pastries looked delicious. Some bakeries put a lot of focus on making their pastries look “pretty”. While the pastries looked great, it was obvious that there is even more attention placed on making pastries taste delicious.
Finally, the staff and the vibe. There isn’t any seating but there is a counter I used to devour my amazing items. The staff were incredibly friendly to locals and tourists alike. They also had a really positive environment with a lot of good cheer spread throughout the place. It was very comfortable and cozy, even without dine in seating.
Boulangerie Utopie definitely hit the mark and exceeded all of my expectations. I was tempted to change my travel plans and stay another day just to visit this delightful little spot in the 11th district. The next time I’m in Paris, this will be my...
Read moreI wanted to visit this bakery since seeing their bakery on Meilleure boulangerie de France on M6 and it was a nice visit. What I love about them is that they do things that aren't seen elsewhere and they do weekend specials that they change every single week so once their gone their gone. Really good marketing strategy as you want to taste it all each weekend! I got too things, one of them is their sesame roll which is what they are known for. They are known for their work with black sesame seeds. The roll itself was nicely flaky though it was underwhelming for me. It had this white glaze on top which made it too sweet and the sesame bitter flavour was almost non existent. I was really looking for that deep, toasted, bitter taste of sesame that you get from tahini but I really had to search for it. So please put more sesame in it and cut back on the glaze! Then it will be perfect :) Then I went for their weekend special which was a croissant dough based pastry filled with rice pudding and strawberry jam. I mean let's talk about bold combinations but it was really good. I loved the contrast of the flaky well laminated croissant dough mixed with this creamy rice pudding with hints of vanilla. And then the touch of strawberry on top, really nice! One thing I would do to improve this lovely pastry even more would be to put some fresh strawberries on top to bring a bit of acidity to balance out to flavour. Then it...
Read moreLook, I get it. Customers are annoying. They want to buy your pastries and then they ask for all sorts of things like napkins (the pastries are very buttery) and extra brown paper bags to wrap the pastries in for take away (again, the French use generous amounts of butter! which makes for delicious pastries!) and then they dare to ask for a bag to put their multiple pastries in (why do they have to buy more than one thing? it might be good for business but godamnit, they are asking for too much) and then they don’t speak French or shall I say perfect French because what is the point of even trying to speak French if you can’t do it perfectly and why do they have to ask you again for something? Don’t they know you’re busy chatting with your colleagues? Rearranging pastries for no particular reason? And then there is this tourist, this ominous creature, bothering you about napkins and such nonsense. „Please speak to my colleague“ they will tell you. Except said colleague is busy at the register with other customers while they are…also busy? I guess? All this might be considered rude in other countries, dimensions, universes. But oh no, not in Paris. You have the privilege to walk into this boulangerie and buy their - admittedly great- pastries, so you better be grateful for the experience of being treated like an idiot by a French- non, excusez moi - Parisian bakery employee
