MAEUM — Restaurant in Paris

Went in September for a drink. There were two of us, meant to try their drink as the rating was good on Google Map. We just had breakfast so only wanted one drink to share. Obviously it’s not allowed 😂 we were told to order at least one drink each. Because “it’s going to be packed in the next hour”. And “It’s clearly written on the instructions”.

At that time we were the only customers in the Cafe! What does she meant to say that we have to order two drinks because it’s going to be packed??? And we don’t speak French, what’s the point saying that we need to read the instructions on table.

It’s been two months and when I look back at the trip to Paris, it’s still a weird experience for me. I guess this place is just not for everyone.

Not fair and no need to call me rude. We entered with a hello to the lady who hosted us. And I remembered in a good mood until the last 5 minutes.

We asked for two Lattes right away as it was in a Cafe. But after realising that you don’t do regular coffee, we started looking at the menu and asked for recommendations. Please don’t make it sound like we were intentionally asking for drinks you that don’t do.

When you say that at least one drink for each, you surely didn’t use the word ‘obviously’, but you made the assumption that I should understand the French instructions on table. ‘It’s all on the instructions’. That’s what you said.

Saying that ‘it’s going to be packed in the next hour’ didn’t help me understand why we have to order two drinks. Only made me feel unwelcome. I’m sure it’s a popular popular place with all that great comments and gets busy everyday. But what’s that to do with me? I’ll be in the way if I order only one drink for two people?

You were accusing me being disrespectful to your culture as I tried to oder one drink for two. I apologise for not knowing your culture (French?). I’ve been to many places and basically a coffee person. Never heard of this in any countries in EU, or other Cafe in Paris. But again, now that you say that it’s your culture, I’ll respect that, so apologise for the possible intrusion.

I was saying the experience was weird to me, it truly was. And I got called ‘a weird client’. That was personal and unkind. No need to be mean about the bad comments and targeting at the person who leave it.

You say that you haven’t encountered weird customers in a year. Unfortunately, this was the only bad experience for me in 4 years of living and travelling in EU. Bad enough for me to write on Google with a follow-up response. Smile emoji doesn’t mean you are kind and nice.

As you said, I might be the one who’s not ‘open-minded and kind’ enough to enjoy your perfect coffee shop. But I’ll stand by what I experienced.

This is a cute Korean cafe owned by the sweetest people in Paris. I’ve gone frequently for the BTS events that they organize and you can tell how much effort that they put into these events. I always have a really fun time and feel very welcome. If you ever have the opportunity to go for one of the BTS events, you should definitely go. Make sure to reserve your spots fast on their website though, because they sell quick!

Even if you are not a fan of BTS, this cafe is not to be missed. The owners are so sweet and kind. You can really tell that they enjoy what they’re doing and they put in so much hard work and effort to create such a genuine and great experience every time that you go there. The food and drinks are as delicious as they are beautiful and the cafe is decorated with care and style.

I started learning Korean by myself 4 years ago, but I’ve never had the confidence or opportunity to speak it with other people until I came here. The owners really make going to this cafe so special. If you are learning Korean you can practice with them and feel encouraged to continue studying. I’ve always felt so welcome here as the owners remember you every time you come back. You can really tell how much they care about the people that come to their cafe. Je vais régulièrement à Maeum et à chaque fois, c'est un pur moment de plaisir à tous points de vue. Certes, le local est petit, mais tout est réuni pour que l'on passe un excellent moment.

AMBIANCE: Géniale ! très cosy, dépaysante, calme, belles couleurs pastel : on a l'impression d'être dans une petite ruelle à Séoul. Il y a un réel effort dans la conception de ce store, beaucoup de travail en amont et le rendu est super : c'est un mélange de café et galerie d'art ! j'ai adoré la déco, la musique et je trouve qu'en aucun cas, la taille du local soit un obstacle, bien au contraire. C'est calme, et pas bruyant. Il y a même une partie créations de vêtements sympas, de qualité au design stylé, à la coréenne. Les évènements sont trop sympas. Je suis très réduit en musique K-Pop, mais j'ai adoré les évènements, car j'ai découvert de belles chansons, et j'ai même gagné des cadeaux :D. Les évènements sont variés: musique, art, histoire et conviennent à tout le monde !

BOISSONS & DESERTS: Les boissons sont vraiment bonnes, légères, pas trop sucrées, originales, que ce soit en chaud ou en froid, j'ai tout aimé. Je suis compliqué en dessert et je n'aime pas la pâte d'haricot, mais j'ai réussi à en manger chez Maeum, dans un dessert sous forme de noix servies dans une boite d'œufs originale et marrante. Il n'y a que chez Maeum que je peux manger la pâte d'haricot. Ce dessert est trop bon, rien que l'odeur de la cuisson suffit pour être heureux. J'ai aussi testé le Bingsu et c'était une belle découverte: les sauces sucrées adoucissent la glace et donnent un bon goût équilibré. Dessert idéal en été ( avec un bon thé glacé au yuzu :D ). Sinon, j'ai aimé le reste. Seul petit regret ? Pas plus de choix en dessert, mais cela ne me dérange pas tant que ça car je sais que le peu qui est proposé est fait avec délicatesse, minutie et amour. Aussi, Maeum propose souvent de nouveaux desserts, donc j'aime la surprise et le changement.

COMMUNICATION: très efficace, que ce soit sur Instagram, google, site ou Facebook, on trouve toutes les infos réactualisées. Les modalités de réservation des évènements sont simples et claires. Maeum fait de son mieux pour faciliter l'accès au store et indique même les heures creuses pour permettre aux clients de s'y rendre et profiter d'un moment de détente sans avoir à attendre, donc c'est top ! J'aime bien aussi suivre les aventures du propriétaire qui fait des stroy sympas sur la Corée.

PERSONNEL: J'ai parcouru le monde et testé de nombreux lieux et c'est la première fois que je rencontre des gérants aussi souriants, gentils, talentueux et qui accordent de l'importance au bien-être de leurs clients. Quand je vais à Maeum, je n'ai pas l'impression d'être dans un café, mais chez des personnes. L'accueil est chaleureux, la serveuse est tellement gentille : elle nous demande souvent si les boissons et desserts sont à notre goût, prend le temps de discuter avec nous et le propriétaire ( coréen) est adorable. Il prend le temps de parler avec nous et d'échanger sur la Corée, la culture, la gastronomie. Comme j'ai commencé à étudier le coréen, il m'apprend des petites phrases et me donne des autocollants comportant des proverbes coréens qu'il m'explique et même des bonbons coréens :D ! C'est vraiment sympa. Je ne pense pas que Maeum serait le même sans ces propriétaires, c'est aussi pour eux qu'on y retourne. Tous mes amis ont adoré le lieu, et cela ne nous dérange pas de faire la queue s'il y a du monde.

Je ne peux que recommander ce café store ! Si vous cherchez un petit voyage immobile en Corée, dans une ambiance sympa, avec de bonnes boissons et un personnel au top, vous savez alors...
