Laksøn Rouen — Restaurant in Rouen

For what was supposed to be a nice birthday meal out we found this place to be disappointing. Firstly with the waiter who was rather arrogant from the moment we sat down. His attempts to try to act like he was knowledgeable simply came across like he was speaking down to people. Answering back with sarcastic comments when ordering drinks was not amusing. Unfortunately, his attempts at humour at his guests expense and his pretentious manner did not sit well with me at all. After many years of myself being a Hotel Manager and a Food and Beverage Manager this is not something that should be happening in any establishment. It would seem more training is needed in service to make guests feel welcome. Secondly, I have to say the food was sub standard. One starter there had been so much lime added to the dish. It was so overpowered by the taste of lime that there was no flavour from the fish at all. And unfortunately with the main meals, the gambas risotto was undercooked and both meals were served cold which is a shame. Advising the waiter of the problems with the food was simply not an option as we knew the kind of sarcastic response we would get and we didn't want to ruin our day any more. The setting is fantastic — a sleek, modern restaurant with an open kitchen and stunning views over the Seine. The food was sublime and clearly fresh; you watch it come together right in front of you thanks to the open kitchen. I also appreciated some genuinely (for a Belgian) surprising pairings — think maatjes (young herring) with strawberries — which sounds unlikely but absolutely works and is well worth ordering. We ate here on tow different days. The first time our server was Chantal. She was very attentive and took great care of us. The second time was in the evening and were were served well by Sarah, Elise and Louis. They were quick and handled our many orders. The kitchen team made excellent food so thanks to them as well.
