My hotel recommended this restaurant, and what a lucky chance that was! I have nothing but good things to say about this restaurant. It is very clean, and decorated comfortably but very current- nothing dated here. I was lucky enough to get a table as a walk in on a Wednesday night at 7, but the restaurant was mostly full the whole time I was there so I imagine reservations are probably a must during the season. The menu is small but obviously carefully curated, I chose the duck confit with a tomate burrata to start. The owner recommended an excellent glass of wine that went perfectly with my food. Both dishes were excellent, but the burrata would have been a perfect share for two (yet I ate most of it by myself), because the heirloom tomatoes were perfectly ripe, and the balance of flavors with pesto and basil, the creamy, slightly salty cheese, as well as a lemon ice/granite ball, made it hard to quit early! The duck was tender and flavorful, and the frites served with it tasted like they might have been a mix of root veg, perhaps some turnip or parsnip or rutabaga was sliced in along with the potatoes? Or maybe there is a magic spice, but those fries were by turns sweet, salty, spicy, mysterious, and in the end an unanswered question. I also must mention that I love that the family runs the place- dad cooks, mom runs the front, and the daughters are in there working. This is how you keep your family strong-you teach your kids confidence and self-esteem by letting them see that they are an integral part of their family story, and have valuable contributions to make and help to give. By the time they’re 16 they will have a genuine work ethic- responsible, sensible, mature, trustworthy, and knowing how to pitch in and work a long day, and learning it under maman and papas eyes and guidance. Even if neither kid stays in the restaurant biz, they’ll have some real skills to take into whatever career they choose. I could get behind working the family business no matter what, but this restaurant is making great, creative food in a cozy, even joyful space, together as well. I wish I could take this family home in my suitcase and get them to feed me and my town with such a joyful spirit! Anyway, if you’ve read all this yapyap you get a gold star for effort. GO to this restaurant, with someone you love if possible, and just appreciate how thoughtfully created, carefully seasonally sourced, and cooked with love can give you a delightful couple of hours. I wish I could give it 11 stars out of 5. And I wish the Sarler Family the best success in...
Read moreDuring our stay in Sarlat we had a meal here. The restaurant is relatively small but very attractive. We arrived just before 7pm to find only two tables available to walk-in customers as the rest were pre booked. The meal was exquisite. I had a baked Camembert starter and fish for my main course. Both dishes were cooked in such a way to bring out the flavours of the food. I really enjoyed each mouthful. We had a 1/2 bottle of red Chateau de Tiregant wine with our meal. I hadn’t heard of this wine before but I must say it was really excellent. For dessert I had the Crème Brûlée, like the rest of the meal it was really gorgeous, beautifully presented and full of flavour. The restaurant ambience was very nice. The staff were friendly and efficient. Prices were also very reasonable. Overall a really memorable experience. I plan another visit to Sarlat later in the year and this restaurant will be top of my...
Read moreToo bad we didn't manage to eat. The two waitresses who greeted us were really rude. We were two and we arrived at 1:15 p.m. asking for a table. They said they had no place; we then suggested that we could wait, and they replied, completely annoyed, that they would not assure anything. Some people at one table politely told us that they were leaving so we asked the waitresses if we could sit down. They replied again that there were no places. We therefore asked about the free table and they said it was impossible to separate the table into two because if four people arrived they would need the table. Although there were three couples who had finished, the waitress looked at us with a serious face waiting for us to leave. Maybe the food is also good, but sometimes politeness and a smile is more important. Really...
