This restaurant is quintessentially German and the ambiance is simply wonderful. I felt very much like I'd walked into the Pinocchio ride at Disneyland. I very much enjoyed looking around the restaurant at the decor. It's claimed to be the oldest restaurant in Aachen and the sign says it was established in 1698, although the building is certainly not that old. We didn't have a reservation and yet they kindly made room for us anyway. The food was outstanding. I had the pork schnitzel with mushroom and onion gravy. It came with roasted potatoes and a salad. Everything was wonderful. The pork was a very nice cut, moist, cooked to perfection and very tender, and the breading was very crisp. The gravy was delicious. The potatoes were flavored very nicely and the salad had a German mustard vinaigrette that was so tasty. This was my first time eating schnitzel and I got the feeling that the proverbial bar was set very, very high. It was a bit difficult to find street parking near the restaurant. Also, our server seemed mildly irritated that we didn't speak German, yet the service was still excellent and I only fault myself for not being better prepared with sufficient German words and phrases. He was very kind to try to help us in English, even giving us English menus. This was our last stop before returning to Amsterdam and I remember commenting that the next time we're in Amsterdam I would gladly make the 2.5 hour drive down to Aachen to...
Read moreLet me start with the positive side. It looks very nice inside. Just go for a beer and you will be just fine. If it was just a bar I would rate it higher. However as a restaurant, I hope you are not hungry, as you will wait over an hour for your food, that isn't tasty or of any high quality. The staff seems to feel that waiting more then one hour for food is normal and acts like you are crazy for asking. Which leaves a bit of a bad feeling, as they could of easily just give and update that it will take a bit longer and or apologize, changing the experience a customer has to a more positive one. Regulars/locals also seem preffered and get full attention and their food faster. Sadly the time it takes and the service received doesn't change the fact that the food just isn't that good. Not that strange actually as you see the staff drinking beer often, so I guess they are just getting drunk during work instead of focusing on delivering a good experience and good food to a visitor. The high ratings are probably coming from their loyal drunk locals, avoid as a tourist, as you are probably not...
Read moreThis restaurant is an absolute jewel that's been in the same family since 1698 (I must confess that I was a bit shocked with that, given that's over 100 years older than the city I live in Canada).
I had the schnitzel with mushroom sauce and my wife had the daily special (green cabbage and saugages). They were both excellent. The beer was also great.
The atmosphere was amazing, homey and cozy. The restaurant was packed with happy people (which is a sight for sore eyes in these post-pandemic times).
The service was spot-on. Our beers arrived fast, and the food followed shortly after. We don't speak German, but that wasn't a problem, they were very accommodating and we got all the service in English (including the menu).
If you like German food and want an authentic experience, you...
