I visited 44 Brekkie on a sunny morning in Berlin, and it turned out to be one of those cafĆ© experiences that just makes you happy ā partly because of the food, and partly because of the cozy, unpretentious vibe.
I had been hearing about their famous egg drop for a while, so thatās where I started. The portion was generous, with soft, pillowy bread holding together perfectly fluffy scrambled eggs, a drizzle of sauce, and that slight sweetness in the bun that balanced the savoriness of the eggs. Itās simple in concept but felt well thought-out in execution ā nothing overcomplicated, just comfort food done right.
To go with it, I ordered their iced matcha mango. At first, I wasnāt sure how those flavors would work together ā matchaās earthiness and mangoās tropical sweetness are not the most obvious pairing ā but it ended up being refreshing and unique. The mango didnāt overpower the matcha; instead, it gave it a light, fruity brightness that was perfect for a summer morning.
Because my sweet tooth can never be ignored, I also went for a croissant and a slice of lemon cake. The croissant had that nice balance of flaky outside and soft, buttery inside. It wasnāt overly greasy, which I appreciate, and had just the right amount of chew. The lemon cake was the real surprise, though ā moist, zesty, and not overly sweet. The citrus flavor came through cleanly, making it a great way to end the meal without feeling heavy.
The atmosphere at 44 Brekkie is friendly and relaxed. Itās the kind of place where you could easily grab something quick to go, but itās also comfortable enough to linger with a coffee and watch the Berlin street life pass by. Staff were warm and efficient, and despite being busy, the service felt personal.
Price-wise, itās on the slightly premium side for breakfast in Berlin, but considering the quality and presentation, Iād say itās worth it. Everything felt fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and presented with care ā nothing was rushed out.
Overall, 44 Brekkie is a spot Iād happily return to. Whether youāre looking for a creative twist on breakfast classics (like that iced matcha mango) or just want a reliably satisfying egg sandwich, it delivers. Itās a place that manages to be both trendy and genuinely welcoming ā and in Berlinās ever-growing food scene, thatās a combination worth...

Food was good, visually good, ingredients seemed fresh, combination of taste was good, but dish was not very comfortable to eat neither with hands nor with cutlery. Scrambled eggs were a bit too raw for my taste. But in overall solid 4 of 5 for me. For many maybe 5. Cappuccino was ok, coffee americano was terrible. Very acidic and not very good taste overall. That's why I would rate overall food experience not more than 4.
Service was not bad - personal barely spoke German but was quite nice. Took a while until we had our food and drinks. To pay we had to go to bar even if restaurant wasn't that full and even there to wait to be able to pay.
Atmosphere was really below expectations. Few tables available outside had no comfortable seating options. A hard wooden stool with height almost same as the table may look cool but is neither comfortable to sit on nor to eat. Same as plain benches without back support. Especially if you have to wait 20-30 minutes for your food. Also guests who put their legs on chairs while taking loud video calls or who order one drink and then read a book in comfort for ages while other people are waiting in a queue to get something to eat do not add to the atmosphere. I know restaurant can not affect that in most cases, but to tell a guest to not put her legs with boots on a chair should be possible.
One more thing - only card payment. I prefer cash payment. If I would have known that it is card payment only, I would have chosen other restaurant. A clearly visible sign that they only accept cards...
Read moreThe concept of their "egg drop" sandwich feels like a Dönner experience because of its size and presentation. If you're a fan of Dönner, you'll probably like it. But if not, you might get disappointed (and quite messy).
Besides that, nice music and friendly service.
However, there's no ventilation inside, which makes the whole place much hotter than necessary. The air inside is humid, "sticky", has a hint of raw egg. It was only 22°C outside, but it felt like 30°C inside. Staff was visibly sweeting š„µ
It would be nice if the owners added fans or something like that to improve ventilation. Just opening the windows is not enough. Especially in the summer months.
Also, the menu says the orange juice is fresh, but unfortunately it's not. True fresh juice is squeezed on demand. Theirs tasted pre-made, so I don't recommend it. They might have squeezed it themselves, but probably many hours in advance. Although this is more efficient, it makes the juice taste exactly like those from the supermarket. Please make them truly fresh šš»
Having said that, their brioche is crazy good. I was expecting it to come a bit toasted, though. Just like the pics. But mine came untoasted.
Lastly, the size of their Iced Coffee and Orange Juice glass is the same, and both too small. Usually both things come in bigger cups (350-400ml), instead of the small 200-250ml cup they provide.
Overall, 3 stars. Probably overhyped,...
