To my surprise, it turned out to be not only a bakery but also a cafe and a store with various delicacies (for example, a paste a la ajvar from Greece, jams, meats, cheeses, and wines). I started by browsing the coffee shelf, a few interesting items I hadn't seen before (unfortunately, those that interested me the most turned out to be intended for espresso). I was given advice on the coffees and ultimately chose Brazilian beans at a very good price.
I left the bakery holding: A butter croissant, which was good, crunchy, not too heavy A croissant with ricotta and pistachio cream that was delicious with a lot of excellent but not-too-sweet cream. It was nicely presented with a dollop of cream and nuts on top. A patisserie called Queen A, caramelized, sprinkled with mountain salt which was ok. A half a loaf of bread, which I think was called Rundbord which is outstanding, densely packed with grains.
For me, the place is good, offering a wide selection of coffees, pastries, and other specialties. In my opinion, it deserves a good rating, however, it lacked the "wow" factor for me. We ate the pastries with relish, but I doubt any of them will remain in my memory. Before I entered, I was wondering if the size of the crowd gathering in front of the entrance would be reflected in the quality of the products and the feelings generated by the place upon entering. Well, the answer is yes, and one can stand there and probably will not be disappointed, however, there are places that cannot boast such recognition as this one, yet offer more. Maybe I'll come back sometime to try other offerings, but considering the plethora of places Berlin offers, the likelihood is small.
In total, I paid 24.5€ which, considering the quality and a bag of speciality coffee, is...
Read moreI am writing this review with genuine distaste and disappointment. I have been a regular customer at Albatros for several years, and during that time I have watched the quality of their products decline dramatically. Each year it has been noticeable, but today was a new low, bad enough to make me seriously reconsider returning.
I walked in hoping to get my favourite cheddar baguette, only to find that sandwiches are now served exclusively in bread rather than baguettes. I settled on a mozzarella sandwich, but from the first bite the experience was underwhelming. The sandwich was uncomfortably cold, far beyond what is necessary for safe storage. I understand the need for refrigeration, but serving it at such a low temperature made it unpleasant to eat. The bread was stale, lacking the softness or crispness one would expect from a bakery. My partner ordered a mortadella sandwich and commented that his bread tasted like it was from the previous day. The ingredients were also subpar, the rucola was limp and far from fresh, and the sandwich was entirely devoid of seasoning. There was no balance of flavour, just a bland, lifeless combination of ingredients that felt carelessly assembled.
Still hoping to salvage my visit, I ordered my long-time favourite apple danish. In the past, this pastry had been a highlight, it was flaky, buttery, and full of flavour. What I received today, however, was dry and lacking the buttery richness, leaving it forgettable at best.
It is disheartening to see a bakery with such a long-standing reputation fall to this level. Albatros once offered products worth returning for, but based on my recent experience, it now feels like a shadow of what it used to be....
