BARES — Restaurant in Berlin

One of the best restaurants I've visited in Berlin. Their main spread is Mediterranean, but the menu is usually eclectic, with European, Indian and Pan-Asian items often on it. The menu changes quite regularly, and I haven't seen the same menu in consecutive weeks in four months now. The prices are also very affordable, with all main courses prices attractively between 4 and 7 euros.

The only problem is that since there are a lot of patrons at lunch, so if you go late, you run the risk of a limited menu, since they often run out of certain dishes. I'm a fan of their wraps and chicken breast preparations, and also the smoked salmon with hash browns. The tortilla and baked, stuffed potato are quite popular as well. Nice ambience. Quite crowded though. There are a couple of vegan options on the menu. I tried 17b vegan udon noodles with crispy duck. The duck was great but it seems they don't have vegan sauces, so the udon noodles were "naked" and quite cold and bland. All vegan options looked rather dry tbh. Shouldn't be too hard to make a vegan udon sauce?! There is Soja sauce and Sriracha on the table. I didn't trust the Sriracha though, as it was unusually liquid and therefore maybe "adjusted" (or it was the brand I didn't recognize). Service is really fast (less than 10 minutes). Vorab: Ich tue mich ausgesprochen schwer damit, Gastronomen schlecht zu bewerten, ganz besonders in der heutigen Zeit. Aber was ich in diesem Restaurant erlebt habe, ist leider an Dreistigkeit nicht zu überbieten und hat mich so geärgert, dass es einfach raus muss.

Mein Mann und ich wollten hier entspannt unsere Mittagspause verbringen. Ich rief vorher im Restaurant an und erkundigte mich, ob Kartenzahlung möglich sei, weil ich kein Bargeld hatte. Dies wurde bejaht. Als ich dann bezahlen wollte, sagte mir der Restaurantinhaber, das Kartengerät sei kaputt und ich müsse bar bezahlen. Als ich ihm mitteilte, kein Bargeld zu haben, machte er eine riesige Szene und blaffte mich an, ich solle gefälligst bezahlen, es sei mein Problem, wenn ich ohne Bargeld in ein Restaurant ginge. Meinen Vorschlag, einen Pfand da zu lassen und das Geld am nächsten Tag vorbei zu bringen, lehnte er ab und bestand darauf, dass ich zum nächsten Geldautomaten ginge und das Geld sofort vorbei bringen solle. Und das Ganze zackig, weil er nur bis 15 Uhr auf habe. Dass ich an diesem Automaten 6 Euro Gebühren hätte zahlen müssen, nur weil SEIN Kartengerät kaputt war, war ihm laut eigener Aussage sch... egal. Schließlich drohte er mir, mich wegen Zechbetrugs anzuzeigen und pöbelte meinen Mann ausländerfeindlich an, obwohl dieser sich fast gar nicht eingemischt hatte. Am Ende musste ich die Polizei rufen, um die Lage zu deeskalieren und überhaupt gehen zu können (schließlich drohte er mit einer Anzeige, sobald ich einen Fuß aus der Tür setzen würde). Das Ende vom Lied war, dass ich das Geld mit dem Segen der Polizei natürlich am nächsten Tag vorbei bringen konnte, weil ich telefonisch ja Kartenzahlung vereinbart hatte.

Das war mit Abstand das unangenehmste Restaurant-Erlebnis meines Lebens. Dem Inhaber empfehle ich ganz dringend eine Gastro-Schulung, um zu lernen, wie man mit Gästen umgeht. Der hat seinen Job...
