Gaststätte Zum Hecht — Restaurant in Berlin

I love you, Berlin. While I‘ve been known for being very enthusiastic about my beloved Hamburg, I want to spread some love about the capital, and home to five of my dearest friends: March + Helena, Nina, Chris, and Tim.

Comparisons…while they serve a purpose when grocery shopping or in finding a new job, they seldomly mirror anything real about the world, especially when the objects of comparisons are places. Places change dynamically, and they are empty by nature: they are entirely dependent on what they are made of: geography, meterology, people, traffic, smells, tastes, mood swings, times in life. Resultingly, I am not comparing Berlin to anything else. I let the capital of the world‘s third most powerful economy speak for itself.

Gaststätte Zum Hecht in Charlottenburg successfully does speak for itself, and thus influences the way one perceives Berlin. Not everyone, but those willing to visit.

And the place didn‘t disappoint. Contrary, the bar entertained. Everyone‘s understanding of entertainment may vary, but what our group of 5 was able to witness this past Friday, was a spectacle. Details cannot be disclosed, but will forever be saved in our memories.

This past weekend, Berlin was Berlin. Just like it will be Berlin next weekend, and the week after. But the experiences its people and other conditions serve its inhabitants and visitors will, dear reader, vary. Undoubtedly. Inevitably. Berlin is dynamic. It‘s vibrant. It moves. It can, therefore, never disappoint. Disappointment is no option. And if you ever feel disappointed in Berlin, the problem isn‘t the city, it‘s you. It‘s your mind. It‘s your false expectation of something so dependent and fast-moving.

And while I am no local guide to the city in specific, I do, however, recommend you to become part of its culture and visit Gaststätte Zum Hecht. You are welcome...

Nun, es muß schon eine ganze Weile her sein als für diesen Laden der Name "Gute Kneipe" zutreffend war. Inzwischen hat sich dieser Ort Dank mancher Mitarbeiter dort als Établissement gemausert, in welchem man insbesondere augenscheinlich ausländischen Gästen unmißverständlich klar macht, dass sie nicht willkommen sind. Insbesondere ein gewisser Tresenmensch namens Ingo tut sich diesbezüglich besonders hervor, wie ich vor zwei Tagen am eigenen Leib erfahren musste, als ich von dieser Person aus unerfindlichen Gründen mit den Worten "Raus hier" in Richtung Ausgang gestoßen wurde, während meine Kumpels, die dem Bild von einem Deutschen eher entsprechen, von ihm vergleichsweise moderat behandelt worden sind. Dabei werden schon mal Gründe aus dem Finger gesogen, um ein solch fragwürdiges Verhalten rechtfertigen zu können. Da wird dann schon mal ein Rauchverbot in der Kneipe erfunden wo nie eines bestanden hat. Oder es wird behauptet, daß von Seiten der "Chefs" eine Vorschrift bestehen würde, derzufolge Gäste welche bereits am Vortag dort waren, des Lokals zu verweisen sind. Ebenso solche, die nicht in kurzen Intervallen ein Bier (große Gläser) nach dem anderen ordern. Gerade Personen wie der erwähnte Ingo, der aus naheliegenden Gründen im Namen der Toleranz das große Wort führt, sollte eigentlich wissen wovon die Rede ist, wenn Menschen zurückgesetzt werden. Überhaupt scheint so manche Tresenkraft heutzutage immer häufiger zu glauben aus ihrem gesetzlich garantierten Hausrecht eine gewisse Machtposition ableiten zu können, bei welcher ihr zudem eine uneingeschränkte Narrenfreiheit zusteht Auf jeden Fall hat sich dieser Ort zu einem Ort gemausert für den das Prädikat ungastlich gelten sollte. Very original traditional Berlin bar. Here you can meet real Berliners speaking the local dialect with their direct attitude. Rather rough neighborhood with some brothels around but not dangerous. Nothing for hipsters and the faint hearted. Not stylish but very authentic. Rather no English. Free sour cucumbers and Schmalz-Stulle.
