In short: excellent coffee, friendly atmosphere and good craftsmanship. Also welcome to read my little longer review here below!
Coffee is not just âcoffeeâ but a universe in itself. Of cause you can say just âcoffeeâ and if you are lucky it will result in a nice cup. Just as you can say just âwineâ and hope to get something you like in your glass, but the experience gets deeper and richer and for sure more interesting if you are more specific. âWhiteâ or âredâ or perhaps ârosĂ©â? French, Italian or German? Or even a specific grape, not to mention district and grower?
Well, the same thing of cause goes for coffee, and if you, just like me, appreciate a good cup, make sure you pay a visit to Cafe Zeremonie on Am Magnitor 12 when you come to Braunschweig. Here you will meet with coffee from Ethiopia, by many considered to be among the best coffees in the world. Now, Zeremonie is not just a cafĂ©, but also importers and roasters of coffee from Ethiopia, and they know what they do when it comes to coffee, mastering the different steps in the process: selecting, roasting, brewing and serving! The espresso, brewed from dark roasted Harrar, has a rich and full aroma that gives you a heavy and powerful experience. If you are looking for a more lean touch you have other varieties and roastings to choose from, like the exciting âwild-kaffeeâ, all served in a nice and intimate cafĂ©, where you easily could spend some hours just because of the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. But you should be prepared to sit down and wait for a while, this is not a place for quick coffee, and it can take a little time to get your order. However it is worth it.
The assortment is based strictly on different Ethiopian varieties of Arabica-beans, and here you will not find any blending with Robusta-beans. Since I am also quite fond of Robusta this gave me a reason for an interesting discussion with the host/owner of Zeremonie, about the differences in quality and taste among the two. Well, taste is a matter of taste, and coffee is not only nice to drink but also interesting to talk about. And at Zeremonie they know what they are talking about when they talk...
Read moreA really nice and cozy place with very friendly staff where you will want to spend a relaxed Sunday afternoon. The theme is Ethiopia and apparently, most of their staff is also from there. The coffee is good, they seem to specialize in espresso and cappuccino. The cappuccino is quite good and accommodates the darker roast profile of their coffees well. The espresso should be more concentrated, the shot I got was a bit watered down and tasted somewhat burnt. I think it could have come out reasonably well if they had adjusted the grind and made it more ristretto. Their cakes and pastries are really excellent. Our kids were treated to a free children's cappuccino. Don't get me wrong, this is not a hipster third wave specialty coffee place or whatever, their roast profile or bean sources possibly wouldn't satisfy those exquisite palates. But I was seeing lots of people dropping in just to buy their coffees which are available in half pound, pound or kilo bags at very reasonable prices. They definitely have something there that's popular with the local crowd, and I very much liked the place. I also liked the fact that there were no "fair trade" or other NGO symbols anywhere to be seen, although it was quite clear to me that the coffee had to be sourced directly from Ethiopian cooperatives. Go see for yourself (and have some...
