Päffgen is a cozy tradition beerhall brewery restaurant which serves a great variety of German cuisine and a single house-beer Kolsch. They actually have two locations in Köln, both with similar food and service. This is their original location, occupying the ground floor of a 3-story concrete building with two signs in front. One is circular extending over the front sidewalk, and the other is a large rectangle with gold letters on the wall over the entrance. You'll enter into a hallway with a few tables and to the right is their dining hall. It is quite popular for dinner and can fill up quickly. During peak hours they also open a couple other side rooms. On both sides of the rustic dining hall are half-booth tables, and there is a long row of tables down the center. The floor is creaking wood, and the walls are wood panel with large classical paintings overhead. The front windows have soft stained glass colors. Large chandeliers provide soft lighting and the place has a cheerful cozy atmosphere. The staff is proficient and quickly makes their way around to take orders and deliver beer. They carry what appear to be steel sampler flight trays, but these are for removing empty glasses. You see, their single beer (in Köln it is naturally a tasty Kolsch) is served only in small 200mL glasses. It's definitely not the Munich traditional of liter sized pours! Their Kolsch is flavorful and easy drinking, and is poured from small wooden barrels they keep near the entrance. The waiters are not shy about bringing replacements, and unless you tell them otherwise they'll assume you want another beer, so let the know when you're on your last pour! I enjoyed several of these small glasses with my delicious meal. During my visit, the kitchen was fast and the food is quite affordable. Their menu covers the full range of foods, and I enjoyed a large pork knuckle meal. The meat fell off the bone, and was delicious. I did not see the brewery equipment but I understand it is here in the building. The original brewery was founded in 1883, and reopened in 1949 after WWII, so they have a very long...

WE WERE NOT WELCOME Not impressed at all. Walked in the place looked lovely, atmosphere was busing. We’ve been to one of these type places before where you place the coster on the table and the staff come around and give you thier home brew and when you’ve had enough you put the coasts ontop of the empty glass to show you don’t want anymore. We asked where to sit and we were basically told to sit anywhere. So we do. All is well, until we tried to get service, after nearly half an hour of waiting to get drinks we tried waving down a man surving drinks. Twice the man handing out the glasses of beer ignored us. We tried to wave him down after a while but still nothing. Even the people next to us tried to help and in the end they asked another gentalmen to give us a drink. At this point worries were rising. Then the gentalmen moved the table causing myself and the person opposite me to get a table leg slammed against our own legs. No, eye contact no sense of remorse. We asked if he spoke English. Blatenly stated no English so we tried our best to explain with what little German speaking we had and obvious motions what we where asking ( wrist watch and menu while someone using basic German asking time and food) We where asking how long is food currently taking. But unfortunately as soon as we asked if we speak English he started talking over us in German and just ignoring our attempts to try and convey our simple question. Then he disappeared, in the mean time we put the tables back because the people on the other side of the table couldn’t get out. But as soon as he came back, my poor leg got slammed against the table again with no regard to myself or the person opposite me. The Germans on the table next to us who we where having a nice chat which where shocked at the way they treated us. We left. It was obvious we were not welcome. Thier loss, the large party I was with where drinkers. In the end we went to a lovely Mexican down the road called Enchilada, very very welcoming staff and we had a laugh with the staff trying to communicate. Would...

I tried to vote without stars because I went today to have a dinner here today. Unfortunately I couldn’t even eat. The place was awesome and I was exited because I went for my first meal in Cologne... we made an order and a misunderstanding happened... the waiter started to fight against us and 20 m before closing the kitchen he said that he couldn’t serve us because the kitchen was closed but he was getting new orders and the dishes were served in the other tables ... so the kitchen was not closed .. we tried to solve the problem but at the end the solution was to leave without having the meal there... if I could say something is the next one... lacking of profesionalism and as manager or owner I don’t even know what he’s doing over there when the costumers are treated really poorly and he knows and he doesn’t know how to solve the problem.. the waiter didn’t want to solve the problem he was just focus bout who is right or wrong.. what can I say I’m so disappointed and I hope people knows... I hope you think twice before going...
