La Esquina — Restaurant in Cologne

I used to like this place and I had been multiple times in the past years. Sad to say I returned yesterday happy to enjoy some delicious tapas and a good night, after months and I was totally disappointed. Unfortunately the food was terrible, eatable yes, but nothing really tasted that good. The sepia was totally tasteless, the ham was definitely not serrano ham, nothing of what we ordered was actually good, not even the bread. The staff for how kind and with the best intentions is clearly not used and comfortable with the job. We had a very long wait between the first appetiser plate and the rest, so long we were almost not hungry anymore. A quick visit to the bathroom also offer a very much not encouraging look into the very very very tiny kitchen: cooks in flip flops (!) juggling food in, to my advise, not a very professional way (it happens sometimes in kitchens, but nonetheless still very unpleasant to see directly during your dinner). I've been in several spanish restaurants and as far as I know this have been one of the best. To be honest I would rate the restaurant with a 4,5 for small other things, but instead of rating low I decided to rate higher putting 5. The menu was super complete, and you could find almost every typical tapa from Spain. What I didn't like was the "patatas bravas" not bc of the taste, just because this wasn't the right tapa, and with the wrong sauce. Apart from that, of course I didn't try everything but for what I could: the tortilla really good done, the fish was super soft and tasty (chipirones, calamares, sepia...) excellent cockatils, and the desserts also delicious! (Das Abendessen war 19.06.2018) Muss leider einen sehr negativen Beitrag hinterlassen. Die Tapas Bar & das Essen hätte wohl eher eine solide 3 oder 4 Sterne Bewertung bekommen. Die Datteln im Speckmantel sind wahrscheinlich die größten und leckersten, die ich in Köln bis jetzt gegessen hatte. Finger Weg von den Oliven (!) - das sind bereits maschinell entkernte quitschende Dinge, ganz ok nachgewürzt - aber Discounter Qualität. Eigenartig.

Das Aioli ist lecker - sehr viel Knoblauch - mag ich aber so - Brot war mir zu gummihaft.

Das eigentliche Problem ist, dass ich auf der Toilette war, um mir nach den Gambas (auch solide) die Hände zu waschen. Ein Mitarbeiter war ebenfalls in der Toilette - aber in der Kabine. Er spülte ab und als er rauskam, macht ich Platz am Waschbecken, dieser Mitarbeiter schlenderte aber seelenruhig an mir vorbei.

Als ich ihn kurz darauf vor der Küche nochmals sah und darauf angesprochen habe, e Entschuldigte sich dieser nicht. Er wiederholte mehrfach nur, er müsse jetzt im Keller etwas machen, bei dem er sich die Hände nur noch dreckiger machen würde. Ich konnte es nicht ganz fassen und wiederholte einfach drei mal den selben Satz: "Sie waren auf Toilette und haben sich nicht die Hände gewaschen." und er immer nur "Ich muss jetzt runter & was machen, und da werden die Hände noch dreckiger."

Ich beendet das Gespräch einfach mit "Sorry, aber das muss ich melden."

Es gibt bestimmt viele Regeln in der Gastro. Die ersten Drei lauten aber: Hände waschen! Hände waschen! Hände waschen!

Ich will nicht päpstlicher sein als der Papst - aber diese unfassbare Logik des Mitarbeiters und einfach die ekelhafte Vorstellung was der Typ alles so am Tag mit seinen Pfoten selbstverständlich anpackt, macht mich mehr als wütend.
