Schweine Janes Altstadt — Restaurant in Dusseldorf

We had a very bad experience, simply because we were not allowed to stay in the restraunt. Why, you ask?

Apparently, they have a rule - every guest has to order at least 1 drink and 1 dish. There was no mention of that anywhere (or I did not find any info on that in the menu or on the walls), the waiter did not inform us of it in advance and the restraunt wasn't full to justify asking us, poor little insignificant people, who would not bring enough profit, to leave. We spent good 15 minutes choosing dishes and then were forced to go.

Additionally, waiter did not offer us English menu, knowing, that we are foreigners. Or they don't offer such nonsense to tourists in the Düsseldorf city center?

This is a very poor experience for the guest, a bad portrayal of German hospitality and I see no excuse to have such a policy.

You are not hungry enough to take a full dish or like to share a meal between yourselves? Too bad, you can't do that here. One of you is driving and can't order a beer and does not want to pay 4 EUR for water? Too bad, you must leave now.

I would love to give this plave another chance in the future and change my rating, but for now.. Solid 1 star for the horrendous...

Food was okay. Service ? Horrible tourist trap level. When we came the place was empty. We were 5 and not that hungry and just wanted to try german food, so we didn't order that much. The waiter said "every one has to order one food and drink, that's the rules". Okay yeah sure, very shady, no respectable restaurant would do this but fine. When i asked for a new glass because mine was dirty, the waiter said "no that's water stain from drying". I smeared the stain and it felt like oil, considering the place sells oily food it's no mystery where that stain came from. I told him it was oil and it seems he felt that i offended his ancestors and kept insisting that it was water stain. In the end as petty revenge, he gave me a glass that's just been washed and completely soaked and wet. And when it's time to pay, he had the audacity to ask for a tip, after i said no he asked again in a demanding tone, and obviously i insisted back. I have visited this place on 24.04.2022. We ordered Schweinhaxe (Pork knuckle), the portions are big. The meat was delicious, tho a bit too salty. The sauce could have been more. The mashed potatoes and Sauerkraut were okay, not "tasty" but just OK. Taste-wise, I would prefer the one I ate at Schumacher Brewery. One other minus point is that you HAVE TO order something to drink, and water costs +5€. I cannot get it why.

About the service, the workers are actually nice. However, as we were kind of chilling there and drinking our drinks, the waitress came to us implying that we need to leave now, as we have finished our food. I technically get the idea that it is not a cafe but we already ate 2 main courses and was just enjoying our "forced" drinks afterwards. Plus, all the other tables (literally) were empty, so we were not hindering anyones business as well.

Overall, the location and the portions are good. Food, service and prices are OK. I am pretty sure there are nicer places with more sitting place, so maybe just consider...
