Café Alma — Restaurant in Freiburg im Breisgau

I visited this cafe today around 1 PM hoping to grab some food, but left completely disappointed and frankly insulted by the service.

When I walked in, I asked if I could order food and was told to take a seat. I sat down and waited, assuming someone would come take my order or at least acknowledge me. After sitting there for several minutes with no service whatsoever, I got up and went back to the counter to place my order myself.

That’s when they told me they had “just closed the kitchen.” No apology, no explanation of why they seated me in the first place if the kitchen was closed, and no acknowledgment that they had wasted my time.

But here’s the real kicker - when I expressed my confusion about the situation, their response was that “it doesn’t make sense for us as a cafe to keep the kitchen open if just one person wants to order.”

I was absolutely floored by this response. They essentially told me that my business didn’t matter to them and that I was somehow unreasonable for expecting to order food at a cafe during what I assumed were normal operating hours.

This experience showed multiple red flags:

Poor communication about kitchen hours (they shut it as a response to slow orders despite seating more tables who expressed wanting to order food) Complete lack of attention to seated customers Unprofessional and dismissive attitude No basic customer service skills Making customers feel like their business is unwanted

Even if they genuinely needed to close the kitchen early for legitimate reasons, there are professional ways to handle that situation.

The attitude I encountered suggests this isn’t a place that values its customers or understands basic hospitality.

Save yourself the frustration and find somewhere else that actually wants your business. There are plenty of other cafes that understand that customer service matters, regardless of how many people happen to be ordering at any given moment.

Human beings are not a quantifiable object that you can discern one person who you sat is not worth...

The service was really bad, even though the quality of food was good. It were four of us and instead of four ordered breakfasts we got only 3. It took really a lot of time before we got the last one, and it was really not nice to wait it that long and see how the same dish come to neighboring tables over and over but not to us - in my opinion the priority in such cases kind of have to be adjusted. In the end we also order another coffee and firstly it was forgotten, then we got one small americano instead of two big 🤦🏼‍♀️ In general the place is not bad, and the concept of having just few full dishes instead of a lot options should make service faster and easier for overcrowded time, but seems like it doesn’t...

Wir waren vor kurzem zum Kaffe und Kuchen hier.

Die Atmosphäre im Café ist sehr angenehmen. Die Einrichtung ist total schön und stimmig. Es ist modern, aber nicht "kühl". Durch die Grüntöne und Blümchen auf den Tischen wirkt es sehr gemütlich. Es war sowohl drinnen als auch draußen (obwohl es sehr regnerisch war) voll. Es kamen immer wieder Gäste rein, die erfolglos nach einem Platz geschaut haben. Daher empfehle ich eine Reservierung. Es gab mehrere Kuchen zur Auswahl, unter anderem auch vegane Varianten. Bei den meisten Kuchen hat ein Stück um die 4€ gekostet. Wir hatten einen Zitronenkuchen und einen Pistazien-Limetten-Kuchen. Beides hat gut geschmeckt. Es hat sich jedoch interessanter gelesen. :) Ich fand die Kuchen vergleichsweise teurer. Ich kenne es eher, dass beim Bäcker oder der Konditorei Tortenstücke ca. 4 Euro kosten. Hier hat jeweils ein Stück von unseren ausgesuchten Kuchen ca. 4,30€ gekostet. Dabei waren es eher 'kleinere' Stücke, eher wie ein Stück von einem Kasten-Marmorkuchen. Ich kann mir aber auch gut vorstellen, dass die veganen Zutaten etwas kostspieliger sind. Dazu haben wir Cappuccino getrunken, die richtig gut waren. Das Personal war sehr nett. Vor allem die Bedienung, die immer ein sehr herzliches Lächeln im Gesicht hatte. Wir hätten sie nur gerne öfters gesehen :) wir waren ca. 1h dort und wir haben sie nur zwei Mal gesehen - als die Bestellung aufgenommen und uns gebracht wurde. Danach kam niemand mehr. Wie gesagt war das Café sowohl drinnen, als auch draußen voll, aber ich denke, der ein oder andere hätte nochmal etwas bestellen wollen.

Wir würden hier auf jeden Fall nochmal her kommen. Es ist ein sehr süßes Café, in dem man bestimmt auch richtig gut...
