We loved this place! Everything we had ordered for brunch was fresh, tasty, perfectly made, well presented. Coffee was good as well.

I liked the decor and service a lot as well, we felt right at home and it was totally fine to stay quite long (we had a 3rd person joining us after we had already finished eating).

The name of this place is actually a play on the owner’s name, Nils Berschneider -> BER-Schneider -> B: Berta E: Emil R: Richard Schneider. Basically, that’s from the German spelling alphabet, when you spell out the single letters of the name - which apparently their family had to do all the time. Although Nils’ father and grandfather ran a butcher-shop in the same location in the 50ies, this restaurant only opened recently after a change of ownership. It is just around the corner from the big meat market, so anything meat should be very good here! We came for brunch though, so maybe another time to try the meat dishes. . .

Our choice for brunch:

‘Arme Ritter’ : French toast made of Brioche toast, with fruits, mascarpone, home-made granola and maple syrup

‘Chicken ’n’ Waffles’ : buttermilk fried chicken, waffles, sweet potato butter, cole slaw salad, chilli pickles and we added extra maple bacon

‘Omelette’ on sourdough bread with extra spinach and Portobello mushrooms

‘Avocadobrot’ : choice of either Brioche toast or sourdough bread, topped with avocado mash, home-made hummus, red beet chutney - it comes with a small side salad and we added extra maple bacon

Reality fell very short of expectations. The good, place was cute, service was great. Coffee was decent. The bad, the food. Everything looked appealing. Eggs berta: eggs were overcooked (see yolks pictured), under seasoned. Hollandaise sauce under seasoned. The most jarring thing was the kraüterschnecke that it was served on. It felt like 2 separate dishes on a plate and nothing worked together. Green Shakshuka: not a shakshuka at all. Eggs were over cooked as above and served on a bed of blanched spinach and peas with feta. Every component was under seasoned. Because the service was good, I debated giving the place a 2 but I went with a 1 star in the end due to how sad and disappointing the experience was. It’s a well rated place with fantastic service so I had hoped for the food to at least be decent.

Ich entschied mich für das Stüllchen mit geräuchertem Schmand und einem Gurken-Rote-Bete-Chutney sowie für die Glasstetter Bratwurst mit Kartoffelpüree, geschmolzenen Zwiebeln und Jus. Letzteres mag zunächst schlicht wirken – genau deshalb habe ich es gewählt: um zu sehen, wie es hier zubereitet wird. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Bei beiden Gerichten war die Harmonie der Zutaten beeindruckend. Genau das zeichnet für mich eine gute Küche für mich aus. Die drei Stüllchen: knusprig, frisch, spannend kombiniert. Das Chutney: fruchtig und fein ausbalanciert. Die Bratwurst: der Jus mit Zwiebeln wunderbar auf die Thüringer Bratwurst abgestimmt, das Püree cremig und genau richtig gewürzt. Dazu ein frisches Urquell vom Fass – herrlich passend zum Essen. Und ein Wort zur Bedienung: freundlich, aufmerksam, unterhaltsam und dabei ganz natürlich gut gelaunt. So fühlt sich echte Gastfreundschaft an. Auch wenn das Restaurant nicht direkt bei mir um die Ecke liegt – ich werde definitiv wiederkommen. Ich war seit langer Zeit nicht mehr so begeistert von einem Abend in einer Schankwirtschaft und habe heute vielen Bekannten davon erzählt.

Visited the restaurant on a Saturday evening, for an early dinner (we were in total 4 people). The service was EXTREMELY slow and unfriendly. It is worth to mention that the restaurant was not very busy when we arrived. We managed to order only 2 rounds of drinks because no one was checking in on us and the food took over an hour to be served. It would take at least 30 mins or more for us to be able to place an order and it would also take a very long time for us to receive our order at the table. Due to the slow and poor service we spent there almost 4 hours (from 7 PM to close to 11PM). They did offer free drinks as a "compensation" which then also took around 35 mins (3 shots and 1 coffee) to be brought to us. One of us had to get up and check on the order, which was sitting on their counter not even being prepared at all. Most of our dinner time was spent trying to find someone that could take our order and we even had to get up 3 TIMES to find someone and remind the staff that we were still waiting on drinks or for us order again. Went here for a brunch today. While making a reservation, we were told that we could only book inside and that they normally have places outside anyway, so it shouldn’t be a problem. There was a problem: the outside area was full with only 1 table available. We ordered food and drinks, the food was served first - unusual. We were waiting for our drinks for over 20 minutes. The excuse was that there was only one bartender. It doesn’t take a lot of time to at least bring some water, while waiting for the cocktails. Overall, the food was really good, the drinks were terrible and ridiculously overpriced for the quality we have gotten. 10€ for Bloody Mary, which was basically tomato juice with black pepper, and 7,5€ for a glass of tetra pack orange juice that they called “mimosa”. Fizzy Dove and Fizzy Gentlemen were undrinkable - overly sweet lemonades. I would recommend going with beer or wine there if you want your brunch to be boozy. Very slow service.
