We had a great experience at this wonderful restaurant serving tasty Hamburg specialties. We ordered a tasting portion of the Labskaus, which is a Hamburg specialty. At first glance, I thought it looked a bit like a beef tartare, so I half expected the meat to be raw. The meat was definitely cooked, and it was very tasty, so much so that we almost regretted not getting the full portion. I also had the Kutterscholle Finkenwerder Art, which is a fried fish dish that is also a Hamburg specialty. It was very unique, although I found it a bit challenging to eat with how many bones there were in the fish. I'm sure this is because I'm not very practiced at eating fish, and not a reflection of their dish. I also loved the boiled potatoes that came as a side. Boiled potatoes are a weird thing to love, but these ones were soft and warm and very well-seasoned. I was also impressed with their house salad, from the variety of veggies to the tasty dressing used. The service was warm, and the restaurant had a nice dining environment. The prices were a bit higher, but given the quality of the food and service and the elevated dining environment, I thought they were quite reasonable. The only complaint I have is I thought the 8.50 euro charge for a bottle of water was a bit pricy. Overall I'd highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for...
Read moreTucked away on a narrow cobblestone street, where old merchant houses whisper stories of Hamburg’s maritime past, you’ll find Deichgraf — a restaurant that feels like a secret waiting to be discovered. Surrounded by blooming flowers and a hand-written chalkboard menu, this place blends history, charm, and an unforgettable culinary experience.
The menu reads like a journey through the region’s flavors. It begins with light and fresh options like a spring salad with shrimp — delicate and ideal for sunny days — and a sweet potato and coconut soup with North Sea shrimp, creamy and surprisingly refined. There’s also the classic Labskaus, a traditional northern German dish, perfect for those seeking something authentically local.
But two dishes in particular deserve special praise. First, the trio of fish varieties, served with potatoes and a unique house sauce that elevates every bite. The fish is expertly cooked, tender, and flavorful, and the vegetable garnish adds just the right touch of freshness.
Then there’s the star of the table: the Havelland pork chop. Juicy, perfectly seasoned, served with a distinctive sauce that balances smokiness with a hint of sweetness, and accompanied by spiced cabbage and pan-fried potatoes. It’s a hearty, soul-satisfying dish that tells the story of rural German kitchens at their best.
Deichgraf may not be the cheapest option, but it’s worth every cent. The ingredients are high-quality, the service is warm, and the atmosphere — nestled among history — makes every moment special.
A perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or an unhurried dinner. Highly recommended if you’re looking for more than just a meal — you’re in for an experience.
Read moreWe were initially very pleased when we arrived at this restaurant, but unfortunately, our experience took a turn after dinner. The waiter, who seemed very kind at first, informed us when we were about to pay that there was a “rule” specific to Hamburg requiring a tip of 10-15%. As frequent travelers, we always enjoy our experiences and are quite generous. However, this time we felt deceived, especially when we later discovered at other establishments that this so-called “rule” was entirely made up by the waiter to scam us.
For a place as chic and upscale as this, such behavior is completely unacceptable. We were very disappointed to have our evening spoiled by...
