Tiny place with amazing fischbrötschen. I only recently arrived in Hamburg and heard everywhere that this was what you had to eat. To be honest with you I was quite sceptical. A bit of fish in a white roll? How good could that be? Wouldn't smoked fish be better on some dark rye with a some pickled cucumber? I tried two different types with Bismarck herring and Matjes herring and both were sensational. Large, fat and juicy pieces of herring in super fresh bread rolls with lots of herby mayo. I asked them to put some cucumber in each role and they looked at me like I was mad but put a derisory single slice in each. However, I do have to warn you that eating them is impossible to do without getting totally covered. I haven't been this covered in food remains since primary school when Mrs Thomas wouldn't let me eat at the big table because I was such a messy eater. I had to go home and have a shower afterwards. Looking at what some of the people were eating in the tiny dining area, the fish and chips did not look that impressive but just go for the...
Read moreI tried the lapskaus (€11,20) and found it thoroughly tasty with a sizable portion. Stumbled upon this eatery as I was deciding between two other neighbouring restaurants, and what a pleasant surprise it was! This small, unassuming place turned out to be a hidden gem, serving delightful local fare. The décor is authentically local, with good reviews from people from all over the world plastered on the walls.
What made the experience even more enjoyable was the excellent service. Both the lady at the front and the chefs were friendly and hospitable. They graciously allowed me to use their restroom upon request, which added to their welcoming aura. To add on, they have both outdoor and indoor sitting options, but it can be a little restrictive indoors. For anyone exploring affordable dining options in Hamburg, I'd say it's worth giving this...
Read moreSimple hole-in-the-wall fish place. Really friendly. We ordered cod (Kabeljau) filet, a cod meatball (Dorschfrikadelle) sandwich, and fish nuggets, all very good. (The cod filet came with tartar sauce, which made it similar to the American fish and chips of my youth.) Plot complication: we realized they were cash-only after we ordered, so I had to jog to Deutsche Bank 0.4 miles away, so my family was done eating before I got back with the cash. The waiter heated up my fish without being asked, and told me to finish eating before paying, saying "Geld ist Nebensache' :-)
For dessert we had ice cream next door, also good (1.30 for a cone).
Fwiw, Deichstraße has a nice vibe to it. Some of the other restaurants looked worth...
