Did not meet my expectations.

I bought a cardamom bun and a sourdough cheese sandwich, neither of which were up to the standard I was expecting.

Cardamom bun: a relatively lightly spiced (relative to the average Swedish one, anyway) cardamom bun coated with caster sugar. A very pretty piece of bakery, see picture (although it's not a very good picture). However, I think that the bun was overbaked. We were there relatively late in the day (mid-afternoon) and the bun was obviously baked quite a few hours earlier. A small amount of staleness is to be expected (and can be reversed with 10-15 seconds in a microwave), but the crust of the bun was also really hard, as if it had been allowed to dry out for a long time or be left too long in the oven. In short, the flavor was good but the texture was way sub-par.

Sandwich: I love a good sourdough bread and it was initially for this I went into the bakery. This sandwich was the only option at that time and sounded fine to me, so I went with it. It was made to order, which is nice. However, the loaf from which the slice of bread was cut had been left like that for hours, as the bottom 2 mm or so was really quite dry (unlike the rest of the slice). The one making the sandwich should have either cut away those few mm or buttered the dry side... The bread itself was fine - the bread was not super flavorful compared to other sourdoughs I've had, but that is a personal preference and I happen to prefer a tangier bread. The toppings were butter, cheese, chives and a tiny amount of grated horseradish. The chives and horseradish were a really neat addition which elevated the sandwich and they didn't overdo it on the amount of horseradish. However, this was held back by way too much butter (which I'm not sure was actually butter, I got a more margarine-y taste, which is not a plus for me) and a very boring, seemingly pre-sliced cheese of which there was also too much. I would strongly recommend reducing the amount of both butter and cheese and going for something of better quality. I actually felt a bit strange after having eaten the sandwich which is really unusual, and I eat similar sandwiches often since I love cheese and bake sourdough bread myself.

Thus, my expectations were really not met here, but there were clearly some qualities in the products that were unfortunately not made to stand out. Maybe we were unlucky, who knows. Might give it another try if we happen to pass by another time, but after this anticlimactic visit I would rather spend my...

I wanted to visit this place for long and finally got there: I liked it so much! My shokupan with cheese was very delicious and the filter coffee was a great addition to this pleasure. I also bought some sour dough bread which I loved as well :) Probably the best bread place in Hamburg! Thank you and good luck.

Upd: the food is still tasty, but the service is horrible. Two girls an der Theke working this Sunday are so slow and inefficient, this is indescribable. The line of 5 people took them 20 minutes to handle. Then, when it was already my turn, I was watching 10 minutes how they both are preparing two cups of coffee, this was quite a show. A very slow...

Beste Franz Buns!
